I am trying to reinstall syncthing. I purged the installation and reinstalled using apt. when I try to start syncthing it tells me the ports are in use

Dude, it sounds like another process is using the ports that syncthing needs. You can try using the lsof command in the terminal to figure out which process is hogging the ports. Just run lsof -i :<port> to see which processes are using the specified port. If you find any rogue processes, you can kill them using the kill command followed by the process ID (PID). Once those ports are free, you should be good to go with starting syncthing again, bro!
