Hi,
Looking for some help on Realtec troubleshooting !

Installed kernel 6.17.0-23 - worked fine
Updated to 6.17.0-29 - the realtec drivers do not appear anymore, I do not know how to troubleshoot this...

Right not I modified grub to boot back on -23 to be sure I can access the internet.

H/W path Device Class Description
===============================================================
/0/100/1.2/0/3/0 wlp3s0 network RTL8852BE PCIe 802.11ax Wire
/0/100/1.2/0/4/0 enp4s0 network RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Expres --- motherboard, fried by lightning
/0/100/1.2/0/5/0 enp5s0 network RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI E

I spent some time trying to understand, the odd thing is that if I boot back to the other kernel (-23), everything still works.
"Ip a" loops back 4 different network items :
0 -loopback,
1 - my Ethernet on Motherboard (fried... lightning killed that one)
2 + 3 - And my 2 ports off of a realtek chip I installed on the motherboard: includes both wifi + ethernet.

I open 6.17.0-29 - nothing.....
ip a sends only loopback

it can see the hardware if i list it, but not the drivers...

OS told me to run apt --fix-broken install

that fedback "errors were encountered while processing r8168-dkms" but nothing after that ... :(

I have a 2080 super and have installed some Nvidia drivers: right now on NVIDIA (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-595-open(proprietary, tested)
( since i read there can be driver interference? )

If anyone feels like they can help, I'm all ears!

errors were encountered while processing r8168-dkms
Bash:
ls /var/lib/dkms/r8168/
Somewhere in that directory find ../build/make.log

Find make.log and attach it here.
If you can't find it, is there any output from:
Bash:
sudo journalctl -ru dkms --no-pager --since "1 week ago"

OS told me to run apt --fix-broken install
The error happened while you were updating?

output of, depending on whether wifi adapter is USB or PCI device:
Bash:
# if adapter is PCI
lspci -k
# if adapte is USB
lsusb -t

r8168 turning up empty - think I tried disabling it since it mentionned it was obsolete since .17, any quick way to list my network drivers for you?

Bash:
ls /var/lib/dkms/r8168/
sending back nothing
Bash:
<span>sudo</span> journalctl -ru dkms --no-pager --since <span>"1 week ago"</span>
just turns my cursor into > as if it were expecting something else but nothing shows.

The error happened while you were updating?
Yes, I was trying to run Arc Raiders on Steam, and it works fine for 5min before suddently crashing, I was running sudo apt updates

the adapter is PCI, here's the output:

OS told me to run apt --fix-broken install
I was running sudo apt updates
You can re-run dkms by running:
Bash:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

This should create build log file when it fails.
Without log IDK what happens.

I open 6.17.0-29 - nothing.....
ip a sends only loopback
Most likely because drivers were not built by dkms.

You've run this on kernel that works or the other one that doesn't?

if sudo dpkg --configure -a doesn't either succeed or generate a log file then you can instruct grub to use older kernel by default.

sudo dpkg --configure -a
doesnt do anything :(

on the one that works! Should I run it on the other one, save the output and post here?

I have indeed moved the grub default to "1>2" to open the older kernel by default, having no internet is too much of a handicap

Holy ****

Is my computer trolling me?

Rebooted under the version that did not have internet

Now it does have internet (???), but I did just get a crash report from the OS... COuld it be that the internet now works on this kernel version because the below package has failed?

otherwise, as requested, here's the
ran on the kernel version that did not have internet, this time.

Exit code 10 can mean either of:
# 10: add_source_tree(): Malformed dkms.conf file. Cannot load source tree.
# 10: build: Bad return status for module build on kernel: ...

However another interesting thing is that your NIC's use r8169 driver on both kernels while failed dkms package is about r8168.
lspci says chipset is RTL8111/8168/8211/8411.

See this answer for more info about diff:

Is there anything to be gained by reinstalling dkms ?
