I've just discovered that my Calibre version is 6.13.0, whereas the latest release is 8.12.0. And this when I do my "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" and "sudo apt autoclean" every morning ... (kind of my CCleaner substitute).

The Calibre website says, "Please do not use your distribution provided calibre package, as those are often buggy/outdated. Instead use the Binary install described below." (Well, and on the other hand, "Always use the Package Installer...")

The Calibre site offers a download of its latest version for Linux like this:

calibre has a binary install that includes private versions of all its dependencies. It runs on 64-bit Intel or ARM compatible machines. To install or upgrade, simply copy and paste the following command into a terminal and press Enter:

sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.sh | sudo sh /dev/stdin

So yes, I'd like to upgrade my Calibre (why hadn't sudo apt whatever done that already?)

Can I safely do that? Should I uninstall the old one first? Or simply upgrade?

And yes, I know that's a funny thread coming from someone who just happily installed Windows XP...

No, it's Debian based. Would your sudo code be for an Ubuntu-based Linux?

yep,all things being equal, I can't guarantee it will work, but it side steps the need for a certificate

Well, had I READ it, I probably would have noticed...

Anyway, done it and now Calibre looks better. The old one didn't have the possibility to adjust colors.

In general terms it is usually advised to use the repo versions of apps. With that said, I run an old version of the game Sudoku (gnome-sudoku). There was something, I can't remember what, about the newer version I didn't like. A kind soul from a different forum showed me where I could download the .deb installer. And I run the latest version of Strawberry (installed from the .deb file on their website) which is well-ahead of Debian 12's repo version.

The fun thing is that I'm usually not someone running after the latest updates - guess I had Windows for too long. A lot of once nifty programs got worse and worse with every update. CCLeaner? Mailwasher? Both went downhill. Nevermind Norton that was an unholy mess before XP came out. As said - OS via nLite & WSUS-Offline, service massacre, ShadowDefender and a few little oldies but goldies, and I wouldn't touch updates with a ten foot pole. And I hadn't had a problem on my machine since 1998 (the year I kicked the last antivirus from my drive... ;)

Linux is the polar opposite, and it takes some getting used to - particularly since I don't know most of the stuff that's on it. I still fear bloat, and miss Shadow Defender. Looking at Firejail right now, and at ways to harden my Firefox.

I'm with you on Ccleaner. On my Windows box I switched to Wise Care 365 a long time ago. (I still have a Widows box for those few programs where there isn't a good Linux alternative.)

Oh, I still like Windows 7 and will keep it as well, if only for my Anno games. And I have XP in my VirtualBox now. I just wouldn't want them to go online anymore.

I never understand when people come and say they 'hate' Windows - after sticking to it for years on end. Maybe I would think likewise had I ever had Win 8 or 10 or God forbid, 11. My new laptop had Win 11 on it when I bought it (refurbished). Don't think you could just install over it, oh no. Took me a full day to get that crap from the drive, and in the end it could only be scratched off with Gparted. If that hadn't worked, I would've taken a hatchet to it. Fully understand the hate for that one.

But even though Linux is superior in many ways, I'll always have a soft spot for Win 7 and XP.

I still use Firefox.....But... via one of the firefox spinoffs.

Waterfox. https://www.waterfox.net/

I find I can trust it.
