Linux password

I have a great little Linux machine. Its an Acer and its great. I haven't used it for awhile and the distro's are not up to date I am sure. The problem is it has been so long since I used it, I forgot the password how to get in. I don't know how to change it or even if one can in Linux. I might have to reinstall the OS.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Oh I saw the read thing. I read it. Thanks. The only thing I can get to is guest. Also, I am stuck on wired for the internet. Once I saw wireless but can't find it either. I can do much as it is right now. I will give it a go. Thanks so much from Washington State.
