Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.1 and VirtualBox.

When 4 out of 5 are bad and won't install in VirtualBox says it all.
Perhaps not. I would have thought that a non verified .iso would still install......but give dodgy results after installation? I could be wrong, quite easily as I have never encountered a corrupt download of an .iso (fingers crossed)

I see a lot of complaints about problems with Mint failing to boot....black screens etc etc...particularly over at Reddit.com in /linux newbies. The vast majority of those are rectified by disabling secure boot etc. The number of people arriving at reddit without a single clue is enormous. They all have win 10 pc's which are about to hit the wall. (the majority of them anyway)
It is just as well there is a core of helpers over there who are very experienced. Most of them beyond my capabilities.
I have not seen one instance where a bad .iso has been blamed for problems. Plenty of dud usb sticks, and some peoples "innovative " approach to etching the .iso onto the usb stick etc etc

All this is obviously not the case here

Is there a chance that something has changed in a wifi connection here? .....neighbours "borrowing " your connection, or similar?.....a wonky router etc that is interrupting the downloads ?

Are any of the pc's/laptops used, still running on legacy bios as opposed to EFI ?

Are you downloading the .iso's direct to where they will be used.....or are they being moved from a different drive, and then moved to a different pc/laptop...or similar ?

When you are downloading the sha256.sum.txt and the sha256sum.txt.gpg files,,,,are they rightclicked on, and 'saved as" ?

I have searched fairly extensively across the internet.....linuxmint(dot)com included and askubuntu and a whole host of others.... and I do find problems relating to .iso files and their verification. However the vast majority are solved fairly quickly largely due to some error on the part of the user, or their equipment.....not because the .iso is corrupt/dodgy etc etc

Seems to run well...above is my Desktop.

It is a bloody good distro, IMO - I have used it since around v3.8 or so.

Well documented and well supported.

Hey Bob -
I have just installed Linux Lite 7.4 on my spare SSD and using it to write this post.

Is that a part of the rig you have Victoria on, alongside it, or separate to that?

Condobloke...

No Flash Drive used...no WIFI...I'm using my Tower which is UEFI. The ISO is downloaded to the Download Folder...cut and pasted to the Desktop and installed in to Virtualbox on the same computer...the same was done with the Linux Lite ISO.

I have not tried to install the Mint ISO on my spare SSD...so it may or not run but Linux Lite 7.4 installs and runs just fine...fingers crossed.

Wizard...

In my Tower I have two 500GB SSDs...one is running Mint Cinnamon 21.1 and the other is now running Linux Lite 7.4.

To go from one SSD to the other...I disconnect one and connect the other on the Motherboard. When I first installed Cinnamon 21.1 maybe about two years ago...I noticed some Folders in the Home Folder were missing...then a few days later the internet stopped...was a bad ISO.

I downloaded another Mint ISO from a different mirror and it was fine...still running it now...so it's not the first time and I don't think it's bad luck either.

Something else...

Linux Lite 7.4 ISO will not boot from Ventoy...says... Invalid magic number and You need to load the kernel first.

Yet when I burn the ISO to an empty Flash Drive...it Boots just fine.

@bob466 , has one of those .iso's that would NOT verify, installed for you ?

If one of them has installed, try running neofetch on that pc/laptop

the reason I ask is :

Hi,
I just installed the latest linux mint version and I see that it is based on Linux Mint trixie/sid (xia), I am surprised, mint it's not supposed to be based on ubuntu?

and if not, if it is based on Debian, mint it is supposed to be stable so why not base on bookworn?

and: OS: Linux Mint trixie/sid (xia)

Definitely worth a read.

One of the members there, 'FlyingWrench70' knows his stuff

Click on the pic at the top...it acts as a link to that topic in Reddit

I only installed one Mint Cinnamon 22.1 ISO in VirtualBox...the one the Verify tool said was good.

I'm removing Linux Lite 7.4 from my internal SSD...the bloody thing now won't connect to the internet...worked fine yesterday and this morning but now will not connect...what a waste of time.

Before you say it's the internet or I've done something wrong...I disconnected the Linux Lite Internal Drive and connected my Mint Cinnamon 21.1 Drive...internet works just fine...the other thing...I had my Graphic Card set in Drivers but the Lite Distro set it back to the open source which made the screen look much bigger...why who knows.

Anyway I'm going to download Mint Cinnamon 22.1 ISO and install it on my spare SSD just for fun.

I have installed Mint Cinnamon 22.1 on my spare SSD...runs well with no problems so far.

I'm using 22.1 at the moment to post in this Thread.

I downloaded two ISOs...one from AARNet and the other from Uni NZ. The verify tool said both had the wrong signature...I don't think the Verify tool works very well because it said the Linux Lite ISO was good and look what happened.

It seems Mint isn't the only Distro that's having problems with new versions.

Here's my 22.1 Desktop...
