Linux hangs immediately after login screen (fresh install)

Which distro was installed? Ubuntu? Have you performed an

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

or used synaptic to do the same thing? If not, try that first.

Glad to see your making progress, have you checked the network manager [normally icon on bottom right of screen] to see if wired connection switched on
