I actually donate to smaller projects who's software I use a lot, I don't donate do the large projects as they usually already have a lot of donations and even sometimes big donations from companies.
 
Treat maintainers like the humans they are, not free infrastructure. Companies profiting from open source need to contribute financially (at the very least).
There is video where Linus was questioned about how does he feel knowing big companies make millions in profit on Linux that he made for free and does not get payment in return.

They express negativity and cynicism towards it. Dark humor becomes a coping mechanism. "Fix it, fork it, f*ck off" becomes the phrase of choice.
