Hey all, I dual-booted Rocky Linux 9 with Windows on my Dell laptop (Intel UHD 620), but I’m stuck with llvmpipe (software rendering) and my external monitor (HDMI) isn’t detected.

  • Removed nomodeset after install, rebuilt GRUB
  • lspci shows Intel GPU, glxinfo still shows llvmpipe
  • xrandr shows only a “default” screen, no HDMI/eDP outputs
  • Tried setting up modesetting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
  • Switched to X11 (disabled Wayland), no change

Anyone got this working on Rocky 9? Or should I try Fedora or something newer?

Thanks!

We run quite a bit of Rocky, It's probably installed on over 200 systems here. I will say none of them are dual boot, but I don't think that should matter. I don't ever do anything with the modeset, I just leave it default. In Rocky 9 I've had much better luck with Wayland than legacy X11.

Fedora will give you newer drivers, newer kernels, and newer versions of software, that could help, but really I don't have these problems with Rocky 9.

This may be useful.

For Rocky...

You won't have to do any of this for Rocky 9 or Fedora. The dynamic kernel modules are already included.
