Installing linux

I have always recommended -r optical discs burnt at no faster than x3 [cannot remember the last time I had a burn failed]

on newer machines , say up to 8 yrs old , check in the BIOS?UEFI that boot from USB and in your case also Optical drive are enabled.

We should all have such ghosts in our closets.

Create an external backup of your documents

Start from there. Before you do, turn off secure boot in your UEFI (BIOS) settings. Your BIOS should be configured/set to UEFI. And if you come across it your partition scheme should be set to GPT.

Download your LMDE 7 from : https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=325
Use Ventoy or Balena Etcher to attach/burn it to your usb stick
You have Debian running there somewhere....use that pc/laptop to do the preparation of the usb stick before booting the Dell to that usb.

let me know how you get on.

That's great news on the install success, with the found DVD. ;)

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with a DVD player that I haven't used in ages (hope it still works), and blank DVDs to burn (there's a joke there somewhere).

I already have 'Gigi' in my stable of 79, but I can give it a try via DVD on my weekend, and see if I learn anything of use to you.

Cheers

Wizard

Brian the OP has got 'Gigi' installed.

he is looking for 'punishment' ?? !!....assuming the dell has a dvd drive, the screenshot below shows dvd burning apps....He will find one in his Debian install. Brasero is the easiest to use

So, burn the .iso to a dvd and put then put the cd in the draw with the pc turned off......then turn it on, and follow the same sequence as if you had just plugged a usb stick in. (boot to it...that takes you to the 'Live' instance.....then double clik oin Install LMDE on the desktop etc etc

The instructions I linked to cover the steps

But what will I end up with? I want LMDE7 on my internal hd, not on a stick.

True and it is for this reason we are blessed with a veil drawn before us so that in our present time we do not remember our past lives. Imagine how much scar tissue would be needed to cover those.

Y'know, I'm a-wondering, now. When was the optical drive last cleaned? A Q-tip cotton wool bud with a spot of alcohol on the end would work wonders if gently wiped over the optical drive's lens.

People never seem to think things like this ever get dirty, but.....they do.

Just my two-penn'orth, FWIW.

Mike. ;)

My optical drive is new.

Create an external backup of your documents :....this is just a starting point on that link I sent....the info prior to that is of no interest to you...only the info after that heading.
All you wish to do is get lmde on a disc and then install it to the dell....correct?

You have Debian on a separate pc.

On Debian, open the Terminal

COPY AND PASTE the following commands/codes......do not include the $ sign
tap enter in between commands

Update the package index:
1.$
Code:
sudo apt-get update

(enter....password ....)

2.$
Code:
sudo apt-get install brasero-common
(enter)

When this finishes, Brasero should be in the list of apps on Debian on your Sony vaio

Thanks for the time and ideas. For some reason my latest attempt to burn to a DVD worked normally. Someone suggested dust in the drive. It is new but just the same I cleaned it with compressed dry air. Then it worked. So... it almost certainly was hardware, not software that was buggered (that's the right expletive for Australia isn't it?)

Thanks for the help....

Well done !!

Yes, buggered is an appropriate , although in certain circumstances I exclaim (out loud) that the damn thing is knackered. !

Let us know when you have it showing up on the Dell in live mode, and that the Install LMDE icon is on the desktop.

DVDs are obsolete technology. Technology advances quickly. You can buy a USB drive for the same price as a DVD, or maybe less. Buggy whips are no longer a thing, nor are 8-track players. I haven't used a DVD player in years. I'm not much younger than the OP, but I've easily adopted newer technology. It's really not that difficult.

I wonder how small dust can make such difference and it's the wisdom of @MikeWalsh that brings the solution. That wisdom came from several years of experience, you can't just buy it. Well done puppy mate.

I have noted over the years that Linux seems to always play second fiddle to Microsoft. Developers seem to take for granted that we play with linux for amusement and experimentation but always come back to them. So it is with the USB programs that I've seen. In LMDE there is a pen drive writer that is a Linux version of Rufus. It has no name but appears in the default menus. Otherwise new methods seem to always presume we will "go through Windows to get to Linux". Rufus and the others.. all windows prgs. Over the decades I've toyed with getting free from MS now I'm gonna do it.

I'm not able to keep up with changes. Even now I've only used a QR code once and with my great-grandson there to coach me. I dread the thought of traveling by myself now. Back in the 1950s I flew the Pacific, Japan to Philippines thence Hawaii and Midway, Guam all in a Douglas DC-6 with four very nice Pratt and Whitney R2800 radial engines. I never saw a television until I was 11 years old. My family did not have a car until I was 12. I can remember not having a phone and then a party line type. Now you tell me DVD's (and CDs too) are toast? Well I have a CD player in my '05 Toyota and I burn music to CDs to listen to in my car. What? My car is not online? Egads!!!! Oh horrors how will I manage to get around. I only have a smart phone because my daughter will kill me if I cancel the service. I never use it though except for texting and photos.... nothing else. I seldom carry it with me when I go out.

What realy scares me is that MS is talking about axing keyboards and going to voice control ala Star Trek. Well I'm deaf so that won't thrill me very much....

Hell I can't even spell technogolical changes much less pick them up on the fly. If I could time travel back to just after ww2 I'd do it with no regrets.

One last comment: In the mid seventies the tech types knew personal computers were coming. They were billed as devices that would make life easier for us but all they've really done is add levels of complexity. They'd be OK if it weren't for the small percentage of humans that are dishonest... may they all wake up tomorrow missing their testicles.... Please god the world doesn't need any more of those bottom feeding sons a bitches.

Thanks for reading... Now I'm going to play a couple of Xavier Cugat records from my collection to help me to unwind.

That USB image writer is far superior to rufus.
It works like a charm.
There is also a USB Stck formatter....works brilliantly as well.

I loved your comments above.

In my next lifetime I'll be born on Mars. I suspect that by then new babies will be chipped at birth for life long on/off line functioning. I suppose if one is born to it they'll manage but I sure hope that on Mars we can manage to exclude criminals or those with no regard for ethical behaviour. It's the spiritually immature that make life a bitch.... Well I guess that's why god gave us beer to go with the barnie eh?

Beer has a divine place in the aussiesphere....... Just ask @wizardfromoz
