Install ubuntu 7 server

I'm trying to install ubuntu 7 server since the iso is low mbs, seems the 700mb dvd wont fit the other .isos. I'm having issues with the install indicating no dhcp connection. I have a belkin with dynamic and don't want to change - any suggestions? My pc is a emachine from the early '00s.

So yeah... Ubuntu 7.x is from 2007. It's not supported anymore, so you really don't want to use that as a server distro. Ubuntu 13.04 runs just as good as any other distro, as long as you refrain from Xorg (you don't need that anyway). For desktops, I'm a big Ubuntu fan, but on my servers I solely use Debian, for stability and security. about 1gb I reckon but the situation I have is trying to install the lite 7.0 I know it's out of date but I can't seem to get it pass the kernel install either from the cd or cpu. When I choose find the media (hd/cdrom) the error message is no data. At this point when in the cmd fdisk does nothing, I've ckd the internet for ideas on how to fdisk, but sudo and apt get are not available. What now ?

Like others have recommended you should be installing a newer version of Ubuntu. Even with 1GB of RAM it should be fine to do especially if it is a server.

Installing 7.0 will have some serious security implications.

A few weeks ago I loaded the latest Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS 32-bit on my PIII with 512MB RAM and it ran just fine and it is less than 700MB, not sure why you can't get it on to a CD.

My pc is connected to the internet, at this point I've tried setting the bios and resetting it and now getting an error I/O error reading boot CD. What I'd like to do is to fdisk and start new. I was able to get into the Ubuntu desktop version but no good. I have downloaded .isos 8 hardy, 9.10, 12.04 and putting them into the cdtray doesn't respond, only the error message.
Help me Obi-Wan your only along with other informational help.

If you are having this issue across multiple disks then it could be that you have a bad/failing CD/DVD drive. You can install from USB if your hardware supports that, or change out the failing hardware.

Also are you sure that you are burning a bootable disc and not just putting the ISO file on the media?

Would be you are not getting the .iso burned properly, most likely a defect CD Drive.

Do you have a means to burn the CD on another computer?

As mentioned by grim76, are you actually "Burning the ISO"?

It is a common mistake among newbies to just copy an ISO onto a disk. Burning an ISO is a special operation which creates a Linux bootable disk. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

I agee about the difficulty of installing Lite 7. I have since purchased r/w dvd and ran the check md5sum from the downloaded 8.10 and all is ok. Now for the reboot on the vista pc with the dvd in and hope for install. Only then will I hope to upgrade to the higher level.

After burning the dvd r/w and putting in the cd tray and reboot I'm waiting for installation, but receive 'out of range' which others say is the screen settings. But now how to find the changes either from bios or side bar settings on screen. While trying to access 'Safe Mode', the pc goes directly to Verifying DMI Pool Data, boot from CD:; I can access Bios and F10.But the problem seems to changing the resolution. As I said at the startup screen of Ubuntu I have the option to install Ubuntu but 'Out of Range' comes up. More to come I'm sure.

Here's the update. I switched monitors going with my win8 27" and the desktop is way to large even for the 27", now to search the internet on how to access the system menu or applications. I have read all the keyboard settings with in the 8.10 help menus. Nothing so far. Although I did find ctrl+alt+ - and checking it out.

I still wonder why you haven't used 12.04 or 13.04.

Ubuntu 10.04 won't receive security updates anymore and therefore is a very bad choice for server use. 12.04 will be supported until April 2017, which would be the logical way to go.

I made the mistake of trying to change the op to linux 7 server as an op to startup with and then to 10.04. After reading reviews and information here and on Ubuntu forums have burned a 12.04 and now have to check the check sum to make sure it's all there. Then onto trying to install the op. I checked the Md5sum for the download I got and it's not the same. So I'm going to wearegeek's suggested site for 12.04 (1 & 2). Now I'm downloading Linux distros for 12.04.2 and 13.04 the checksum isn't matching. If these are downloaded from the Ubuntu download sites then what is it I'm missing? In looking for answers I noticed http://askubuntu.com/questions/180218/why-does-integrity-check-fail-for-the-12-04-1-alternate-iso. Which has a suggestion for as well as the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files and related PGP signatures, now in my downloaded copy of 12.04 and 13.04 these both have a notepad full of md5sum listings. Now I wonder if all the above are additional or should be included in the download? This is the most up to date info available.
