SOLVED AND FURIOUS. See this post in this thread.

After installing the update, NordVPN requested permission to collect performance data. I answered 'no'. After that, I couldn't get on the internet, refresh updates, connect to the software manager, nothing. The network connection was fine. I couldn't find any hardware issues. Resetting networks didn't help. Restarting my PC and phone (I tether my phone) didn't help.

Uninstalling NordVPN fixed the problem. I haven't put it back on yet, I don't know if the problem will persist. Has anyone else had this happen?

I have zero experience with Nord.

I have had, however, considerable experience with airvpn. ...and have always found them to be reliable and consistent.

Recently i noticed a great deal of comment both here and on reddit re Mullvad VPN

I gave it a run, download speed was very fast (via Switzerland/Sweden, and the app felt quite solid. I opted to test it out for a month. Their price does not vary regardless of the length of time you take it for
Many members here speak highly about it.

I still have 6 months left on a 2 year subscription. I've been very happy with it. This is the first time I've had any serious problems with it. I'm hoping it's just a glitch.

Have you searched for others having problems with it?

You could contact the company, or ask someone to do that for you (I'm not volunteering ;-).

That's all I can think of.

I didn't have time yesterday to find out if other people had the same experience after an update. I posted here in case someone else had the same problem.

Whatever happened, the problem is gone my connection is better than it was now. REALLY FAST after reinstalling and making changes in the settings. In case it's helpful to anyone I'll leave a narrative of how I fixed the problem.

It should first be said that I get internet services by tethering my phone. It's a better connection than the Spectrum I could be using provided by my landlord.

One thing I did that definitely did not help was this...

My NIC has 2 USB ports that I don't use. Yesterday I moved my phone to one of them. My connection was very, very slow using that USB port. I don't why. Seems like it would the best place for tethering, but it wasn't. The thing that fixed it was reinstalling it and making the usual changes in the DNS IP addresses.

I have noticed that my connection seems to be much, much faster now. There is only one thing different. Like I said, my NIC has 2 USB ports that I'm NOT using to tether my phone and never used in the past. Using those ports made my connection really slow. Before I moved my phone today, I made the same changes to the IP addresses in the DNS settings as I have with every other connection. Changes these DNS addresses has always sped up my connection, A LOT. It doesn't seem like making changes in the NIC ethernet settings would make a difference. Maybe this is just a glitch. IDK, but my connection is really now.

If anyone using NordVPN is interested, the DNS IP addresses are:

103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100

After restarting my computer, I again couldn't get on the internet. I had to completely uninstall NordVPN to connect. Right now I don't have time to mess with this. I'll come back and update this thread when I get it figured out.

Nordvpn user here. By any chance do you have "killswitch" enabled? (or maybe it has accidentally during the update process). If you do disable the killswitch and try to connect again.

Also logging out and back in again might help.

I'm not sure if 'killswitch' was enabled when this started. I did not enable it after reinstalling it yesterday. I did all of it through the terminal. I doubt anything was accidentally enabled. I also purged the program, both times. However, nordlynx still shows up in the network (applet?) thingy in the panel.

I don't know,I'll look around the internet later and/or contact NordVPN. I don't have another couple of hours to spend on troubleshooting and hunting down information right now.

I just did a filtered search for the past week. This was published 2 days ago...

No internet access but connected? Here’s why and how to fix it

Glancing through the other results it looks like some changes were made to the kill switch for Windows. I'll look later to find out if something was changed in the Linux app also.

And no internet? Yeah, that's the NordVPN built in killswitch. Check your settings, disable it and you are back online.

Reminds me Acronis software that came preinstalled on one of my external hard drives. Unless I agreed with some of their data collection, I couldn't use it. It just didn't allow me some installation process or something.
I hate these predatory practices.
As long as you pay (that including the discretionary free period), they should leave you alone and it should be opt in, not opt out or no choice for the customer whether they want data collected or not.

It is 'opt in'. I had to type either 'yes' or' no' into the terminal.
Not really, when typing no doesn't allow you to use the software... I meant more for Acronis, not for this vpn which I am not familiar with.

I am using Mullvad VPN Cost : 5 Euros/month (regardless if for one month, a year or a decade.)
That is approx $5.86 USD

1. Generate an account. Do NOT lose that a/c number.

2.

for uninstall : https://mullvad.net/en/help/install-mullvad-app-linux
(sudo apt purge mullvad-vpn)

Setting Mullvad dns....(ONLY if you want this)

Firefox (desktop version)

Click on the menu button in the top right corner and select Settings.
Click on Privacy & Security in the left column.
Scroll down to the bottom.
Under Enable secure DNS using select Max Protection.
Under Choose provider click on the drop down list and select Custom.
In the text field that appears, paste one of the following, then press Enter on your keyboard to set it.
https://dns.mullvad.net/dns-query
https://adblock.dns.mullvad.net/dns-query
https://base.dns.mullvad.net/dns-query
https://extended.dns.mullvad.net/dns-query

HTH

It's something with network settings. I have 5 nordlynx network connections. Flushing the IP addresses isn't doing anything, restarting the network does nothing, I have a DNS6 address even though IPV6 is disabled... I think I might need to start a different thread for this.

I really don't have time for this!!!

I'm not ready to give up. I've been very happy with NordVPN. I haven't learned much about networks and Linux. This is just another opportunity to learn some things. The timing really sucks, I have a lot of other things I need to do RIGHT NOW! I can use my computer, I just can't use my VPN. I never leave it off, I feel so naked!

It has something to do with the network manager, network interface and/or network settings. The commands I've been using and the ones the agent gave me had no effect. If I connect to the VPN, I can't connect to the internet. I need to reset them, not just restart. Restarting the network manager isn't doing a thing.

I need some chocolate!

I just found what the problem is. I'm pasting my edited review of NordVPN on the Google Play store.

"I won't be using this VPN anymore, I won't recommend it, I'll advise against it and I'll tell everyone about the new bs terms being forced on anyone who uses NordVPN. I don't care if my browsing activity is is kept private. In order to use this VPN, I'm forced to agree to iet them collect 'essential' data for the app to work, to enforce their terms of use and allow them to monitor my network traffic. After 4 years they need this? This is BS. I'm going find another VPN."

Just a word to the wise, if you have not already done this.

If/when you install a new vpn, and you have it working

  1. Take a Timeshift snapshot
  2. Insert in the comments field "vpn working"
  3. If you change settings, and they take OK, after a couple of days take another snapshot
  4. Identify where the settings are stored eg /home/sherri/.config/name_of_vpn/ and make sure you include it in snapshots, if you are not snapshotting the whole of your $HOME
Just a thought
