how to repair error: no such partition grub rescue?

hello, i recently buyed an acer aspire E1-531 laptop with windows 8, after that i installed ubuntu, all worked perfectly. but after a week i want to try out Fedora. so i installed it, but it taked forever, so i cancelled it. but now all my partitions are removed. when i boot up it gives this error: no such partition grub rescue. so how do i repair this? i have no windows 8 rescue CD. only windows 7 and Vista rescue CD. so how do i repair this?? pls help
 


Update: i repaired it! i just maked a boot USB stick with UNetBootin. installed Ubuntu 12.04 From that USB stick and my laptop is working again.

Had the same problem with a Acer desktop w Windows 7. Seen your post and tried it with an Ubuntu 12.10 live cd, and it worked fine. Tried other "fixes" with no luck.

You're welcome :) glad i could help you! I also tried other fixes, but that time i wasn't good at computers. i tried reinstalling ubuntu because i heard the newer versions of ubuntu makes partitions on it's own. You can also try Gparted, if you're good at computers. Also after i upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 but sadly it had an internal error and it was difficult to boot. Now i have triple boot installed linux mint 14, windows 7 and windows 8. :)

I currently have the same problem and have been searching countless threads for a solution, but I'm still stuck. This may be a dumb question, but I'm wondering how you guys managed to boot from USB? I still just arrive at "error: no such partition. grub rescue>" whenever I turn my computer on.

To boot from USB you will need to change the boot order in your BIOS. When you first turn the computer on and see the screen come up you should see a "press ____ to enter setup" or something along those lines. Once your in there you will be looking for the boot order, you will want to move USB devices to an earlier spot before your hard disk. Don't mess with any other settings in the BIOS though unless you are sure you know what your doing.

Once you are done there you can exit saving your changes and it should boot from the USB. If your still having problems it is probably something wrong with how you have the USB drive setup. It has to be setup correctly for the computer to recognize it as a boot device.

A bit of background info:
I had Windows 8 and Ubuntu installed, but I decided to remove the Ubuntu partition, however, I did this without restoring MBR (silly me). So whenever I boot I just get into grub rescue, since Grub2 can't find the files it needs (since they were removed along with my Ubuntu partition). So now I only have Windows 8 installed but I can't find a way to boot into it. I unfortunately don't have a windows repair disc either.
 
You actually should be able to get to the settings area I was talking about. The BIOS is the very first thing the computer starts and it then handles setting everything up and telling the computer what drive to look on to find an OS.

For those who are not used to dealing with it though it can be bit tricky to get into the settings as your opportunity to do so is only a second or two long. Right when you turn the computer on it should flash up a screen with company logo (dell, hp, toshiba, ect). It will be first thing to pop on the screen and will only be on for 1-2 seconds. During this time normally in the corner you will see "hit esc to enter setup" or something along those lines.

Depending on your monitor you might just not see this screen because of the delay on your monitor coming back from sleep mode. A way to deal with this would be to as soon as you hit the power button to turn the machine on start tapping esc and see if you land in a menu system. If esc does not work power off and try again using different keys. Some common ones are Esc, F2, F10, and F12 if I remember right. (used to be esc pretty much everywhere, then companies had to be all "cool" and use different keys)
 
No idea as far as windows goes... it's not as easy to fix this as it used to be under older windows versions and before (recovery console, etc).

There are ways to fix it from within a working GNU/Linux system, unfortunately you no longer have that option readily available.

Try booting from a livecd and install the mbr package. You can then write a standard MBR using the install-mbr command

I was indeed able to access BIOS by holding down F2 while starting the computer. Thanks a lot! I should be fine now :)
 
a bit late in the game, but I had the same problems with my Acer pc

I configured my pc to dualboot Linux Mint with Windows 7, tried every software solution I could find, nothing worked. (including the reinstall of Grub via Live CD/USB). I even try to make the MBR work......
The HDD was visable and accesseble, any boot OS I used said that the problem was fixed but the problem stayed. (grub rescue, no such partition found).

The solution: I put the pc off, disconnected the HDD, used an old nes/snes methode to clean*....... reconnected the HDD and viola, everything worked and booted again.

Restoring the Windows bootloader, as described in the video above, means you will lose access to your installed Linux OS. That's not usually the solution folks are looking for on this forum. ;) Repairing the GRUB bootloader allows both Windows and Linux to start again.

But this is an old thread, so no point in elaborating further. GRUB repair solutions can be found elsewhere.
