How to locate an external HDD connected to the PC?

type in discs again....if the drive is there......refer to the pic in post#5....beside the gear icon which I pointed to....there will be either a black square or a black triangle.....If a black triangle click once on the triangle.

(You may need to click once on the drive in question to 'highlight' it.....make it the 'seen drive' )

Sounds like the Drive has been corrupted...in Computer place your mouse on the Drive and right click and select...Format.

Format to either EXT4 or Fat32...when finished double click it and it will appear on the Desktop.
Always safely remove an External Drive.

I don't think you know what you're looking at...in Computer it's shows what it is...if you double click it...all on the Drive will be shown...so how can it be empty.

In Disks...you can't open the Drive to show what's on it...but it shows information about it...it's that simple. View attachment 29547
Thank you.
It is in Computer. I double clicked on it, a message saying: Unable to mount location.
It is in Disks. It shows nothing, empty. Click on the gear, a list opens up, but every letter in there is in grey.

I made a small mistake...After you Format the External Drive in Computer...right click and chose Eject...remove it and plug it back in...now it will show on the Desktop.

It is a Western Digital WD Caviar SATA WD1200 120gb and used on Windows for many years. It was removed from the PC running Windows just a few days ago.

In Disks, when it is clicked, it becomes red and not "black square or a black triangle" anywhere. The + mark and grear icon are there, but not in the red. It shows the capacity of the hard disk if the + mark is clicked, and shows list of 13 items, all in grey.

So the Drive is an Internal Drive...you said External Drive...which makes a big difference.

I wish you'd said that at the beginning...would have saved me a lot of trouble. There are two ways to mount an Internal Drive...one with a SATA cable plugged into a USB port or the Drive connected to the Motherboard.

In Computer on my Cinnamon 22.1, all the hard drives are represented as documents, light grey, and d in lighter grey is on the icon, and a dark square on upper left location. Nothing like yours. "Unable to mount location" shows up if it is clicked. A list of 12 items shows up is it is right clicked, and the first item on top is Open. "Unable to mount location" comes out it Open is clicked.

Just formatted it a second ago. No matter how to click on it after formatting, there is no response to any click, right or left, once or double.

This is a very old 320GB HDD connected with a SATA to USB3 cable to a USB port...it doesn't mount on the Desktop...shows in Computer and Disks...the Drive will not open and can't be formatted in Disks.

When I click on the cogs...everything is grayed out...here's a simple fix...buy a new Drive.

WD Caviar SATA WD1200 120gb
this is an internal HDD for desktop,, so i assume its a3.5 inch [big ] one and not a 2.5 inch [laptop] one
so 2.5 inch SATA laptop drives can be run using a usb3 single connection to SATA, [or if usb2 machine duel usb2 to SATA this is required to cover the power draw] if using a 3.5Inch [big] drive then you will need a power addaptor something like this [its what I use

the Machine may recognise the HDD [by via 5v data syatem] but not enough power to spin it up [2A at 12v]

Here is the same 320GB HDD from 2011...working in Mint Cinnamon 22.1.

It Mounts...shows in Computer and in Disks...I just placed it in my Docking Bay...something like this one...

Can be used for 3.5'' HDDs and 2.5'' SSDs...I haven't used it for a few years.

yes it would work as long as you have it connected to a power supply

yes it would work as long as you have it connected to a power supply
It has a USB 3 cable and a power cable and an on/off switch. The old HDD would also work if I connected it to the Motherboard but I'd have to find a spare SATA data cable...I do have a few spare power cables hanging from the power supply.

I don't see any point doing that as I don't have internal storage Drives anymore and wouldn't use a Drive that old.

Thanks.
The 2 rectangular blocks are similar, but the ones show in my PC are in red, solid red, both blocks.

the rectangular blocks being red is likely the OS theme colour
