, just reinventing the wheel

People say that often, as though it's a complaint. Man, we've reinvented the wheel a bunch of times -- and we're much better off for it. Adding rubber compounds that hold air is one of the best things we've done for the wheel.

That's not reinventing the wheel, that's improving it

And that's my whole point, things like X11 and sysvinit should be improved, not reinvented. :)

I'm not necessarily against that concept, but I don't mind replacing something with something new, especially if it benefits me in some way. While I've yet to dig into the details, Wayland is supposed to be faster and more secure. They tell me that it eliminates screen tearing, provides smoother windowing and animations. It's also supposed to be better for high/variable refresh rates and DPI settings. My understanding is that these are generally things you could not reasonably do with the existing X11 protocols.

That's what they tell me, at any rate. I have absolutely not looked into the details. In fact, I'm probably not qualified to make that assessment. As such, I have to rely on the experts.

The experts seem to think there's a reason to move to Wayland. I am not qualified to object to that. I lack the credentials to hold a valid opinion on the matter. As such, meh... I'll use what they give me, and I'll be grateful for it.
