i had installed ubuntu 21.10 and burned the iso to my hard disk using balena etcher, now i want to format the hard disk but I don't know how to plz help.

Are you going to burn another iso to that disk?

If you are going to do that, there is no need to format it.

Whatever you burn to the disk will automatically format/wipe the disc for you.

no i am not going to burn again I will use a SSD to burn ubuntu into it. i will use this hdd for other purposes

Do you have ANY Linux installed, anywhere ?....If not you will be formatting that disk in Windows system ...

In Windows
Open Disk Management, locate and right-click the disk you'd like to format. Choose Format. Enter a name for the drive.
  • Under File system, choose NTFS. Under Allocation unit size, choose Default. Uncheck Perform a quick format. Select OK > OK.

If you are going to be using the disk in a Windows system, format it to NTFS
If you are going to use the disk in a Linux System, format it to fat32

Just a bit of terminology correction, @brij-linux (and welcome to linux.org):

You don't burn a linux .iso to a hard disk.

You burn it to a USB stick or a DVD and then install to the hard disk.

One way to format is via gparted
It's available by itself or as part of SystemRescue

Do you want to know the command for 1) creating a bootable USB device of one of the above ISOs or any other ISO and/or
2) format the drive in question using the
Code:
mkfs
command?
