How do you install Linux on a DVD player?

I have an old Panasonic DMR-XW300 DVD player and wanted to know how to install Linux on it and what Linux is best. And if it helps I have a hitachi deskstar in it with no adaptor to plug it into anything. Thanks!

Is the hitachi deskstar the actual hard disk drive in that player?

If so, you'll have to get the deskstar out of the DVD player and put it in an enclosure. Than hook up the enclosure to a desktop or laptop pc to perform the Linux installation.

It does have a HDD but it is for video storage only the OS seems to be burnt into an internal emmc card and putting any other OS will probably render it useless, about the only thing you can do is upgrade the firmware
