Linux Mint

After rebooting my computer I am stuck with the layout and refresh rate shown in the picture on an unknown display. I tried 'Reset to Default' but things are still the same. I rebooted the computer twice. I'm still learning the Linux Mint OS to know what to do from here other than ask for help and start searching the internet for answers. If I solve this on my own I'll update this thread with the solution.

I am also not able to change settings on the monitor itself.

System information follows the image.
Thank you.

I found a similar instance of display setting issues and then found this in the 'Update' app.

I'm pretty sure there was a kernel update a few days ago. I don't remember seeing a message to reboot. I usually let my PC go into hibernation instead of shutting it down. This morning was the first reboot since then.

I'm currently using kernel 6.8.0-60 I looked through the history updates for the current kernel. I don't know which update is for this kernel.

I'm going to try the solution suggested above.

Everytime I've done a fresh install of Linux Mint and reboot It loads up to the GUI and stays on the desktop screen with no menu/icons. I can pull up the terminal by pressing ctrl + alt + T. Once I do sudo apt-get full-update it installs some packages that for some reason were not installed during installation and it works fine after another reboot. Probably not related to your issue but maybe it might work for you.

It appears that you're using x11. It's being phased out. Have you tried Wayland?

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.11 with: Xwayland v: 23.2.6 driver: X: loaded:

At least in KDE Plasma, you choose that on the login screen. Can't say for sure in Mint.

It had nothing to do with kernels or X11.

The Linux instructions to get into BIOS ('Shift) are different than my ASUS MOBO instructions (F2 or Del). Neither of them worked. I recently had this problem, not being able to get into BIOS. I wasn't having problems with the display the last time, but it's reasonable to assume they were caused by the same thing. That turned out to be the case.

I live in an excessively dusty place and a dry climate. Perfect conditions for static electricity to build up. I didn't think the dust inside the case would build up again this fast but it did. I took out the CMOS battery, reset BIOS and cleaned up all the dust. Before making changes to the kernel settings I let it boot into Linux Mint first. The problem is gone.

A couple of people have told me it will be a while before X11 is actually phased out. My professor is one of them. He's an IT specialist.

Ah, glad you solved it.

I really think that you need a humidifier. And/or a swamp cooler, Sherri.

This was just what I needed first thing in the morning! I cleaned up everything around my computer also. That added some time. I guess I'll probably doing this again in a month or so. Now I can finally get started on my classwork!

I've never had a Monitor problem...3 years ago my old vga monitor failed...
1749603708795.webp

These days Monitors are HDMI...plugged the new one in and it worked just fine and never had to change any settings.

I'm talking about my Tower but my old Laptop hasn't had screen problems either...with every clean install monitors are set automatically to fit...you can play around with the settings but I never need to.

When not in use...I keep my Laptop in a Laptop bag to avoid dust.

I have a similar Asus desktop.

The desktop I have is all AMD.

The desktop you have is all Intel.

The processor you have does have Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics.

Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics ain't to shabby.

You appear to be using a discrete AMD / Radeon graphics cards.

Usually AMD / Radeon graphics cards work well with Linux OOTB although not always with Wayland.

In the future If problems still exist pull the graphics card and give the Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics processor a try.

Wayland still new although not accepted by some.

I've used Wayland with Gnome DE in Fedora and Fedora SilverBlue and Ubuntu and it worked great.

Cinnamon desktop is Gnome based although not certain which version is being used.

I'm sure in time the Linux Mint developers will get the bugs worked out as new changes most always have bugs.

Just food for thought.

Enjoy your day. :)

For the next time or next person with X11 who comes across this problem:
xrandr -s [target res]
Example:
$ xrandr -s 1920x1080
No sudo needed.
