Other governments have tried this before and the results have not been good.

They do use some Linux servers, of course. But, moving their employees to Linux on the desktop has not gone well. Training and support are generally the reasons they use for failing. Even Russia has tried. I'm not sure how their progress has gone.

Edit: Not that I meant this to sound negative. Quite the opposite. A smaller country like Denmark might make it work.

I'm not cynical about it either.

Several varieties of Linux keep improving and the kernel is improving too.
With Windows becoming more of a drag, it's only a matter of time before more people start to volutarily learn Linux and cross the cultural barriers.

Instead of looking for a "replacement" for Windows, people need to instead switch to something different, whether it's Apple's OS or some kind of decent Linux. Linux has it's own merit's but it's certainly not going to ever be a replacement for Windows, and WINE is nice too but it's not a replacement for Windows.

As far as I can tell, Microsoft keeps shooting itself in the foot and alienating their own clientele base.

It's really not that hard to learn learn Linux or Apple's OS.
In my opinion, as long as the effort is genuine and deliberate the transition is reasonably okay.

I believe Danish people have the mentality and perhaps skill to have it easier than perhaps some others.
Every new Windows version is also a learning curve, so what are we comparing here? :)

some sectors of government and certain businesses could easily only use browser based apps with the actual processing/work being done on dedicated hardware in the background - my work (financial sector) does that now for their banking platform. with a browser based solution it doesnt matter what OS you're using. it's not 100% there yet, there's still a lot of supporting software that is winos based (mainly print support stuff) but many retail locations are close to OS independent.

I dont see the company dropping Windows ever though - they're far too entrenched. most large corporations have to play by the rules that were made decades ago.

Good on Denmark. Why is MS so F'd up? Why can't they get their act together? Is it the owner? Management? First time I'm hearing this news.
