I have a Dell desktop & win 11. trying to download Linux Mint 21.3 from a USB port. The link on the first page didn't work for the download so I searched for a download that would work. But I can't get it to open to a page that I can use or understand. Any ideas?

Thanks, Shirley

G'day shirley, Welcome to Linux.org

Where did the download eventually come from ?

How was the downloaded file attached to the usb ?

I'm not sure where I got the link but it was around here.

I had a usb attached to my computer & I selected the DVD E drive where I downloaded it to. when I told it to open it opened with a black screen that said file md5 checksums. I did not know what that meant & didn't know what to do with it.

You can download Linux Mint from:

Are you using a windows pc to do this ? if you are, there is a special program/app which is used to attach or burn the downloaded file to a usb stick. Using that makes the usb stick bootable (it is a special process, which Balena does fairly easily)

Do you have anyone there who can lend you help with this, if it baffles you ?

It seems you need some hands on help.

There are groups called "Linux User Groups"

If you were to give us an idea of the area you live in ....eg: Chicago USA, Michigan USA, Berlin Germany,

We may be able to find a group near you.

Would that idea suit you ?

I'm in Los Angeles, CA I'm interested in making the USB boot-able. I need instructions, maybe I can figure it out. Thank You

Download the Mint ISO from here...
https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
Choose a mirror and click download...the ISO will be in the downloads folder...it will look like a round disk.

You need to burn the ISO to the Flash Drive with belena...
https://etcher.balena.io
You can also use Ventoy...download the windoze version...
https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html

With Ventoy in windoze...you just plug in your Flash Drive install Ventoy to it and then just drag the Mint ISO in.
Hope this helps.

Take a quiet moment to watch this:

Also worth a read is this. I compiled this a few of years ago, ...it has been used many times.
It may be rather long, but it gets the message across.
If you dont understand any of the steps etc etc....please ask.

Where I have mentioned apps/programs like unetbootin etc for burning the .iso to a usb stick, use either balena etcher or Ventoy
