Can't connect to WiFi using iw <interface> connect

I've just installed arch and I'm having trouble connecting to wi-fi with iw. I'm doing everything by the book (the Arch wiki). I set up the interface and try to connect to an access point using sudo iw dev 'my-interface' connect with a -w flag, get the output saying the interface is connected, then when I run sudo iw dev 'my-interface' link it says Not connected. It doesn't work both in Arch and when I try it in Manjaro. What am I doing wrong?

The network controller's model is Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter, and for the record, I can connect to wi-fi just fine using GUI in Manjaro

Just because a wi-fi works in one distribution out of the box it won't necessarily work on other distribution, there are known problems with Arch and some wi-Fi cards and dongles see this article
