Edit: I'm using KDE Plasma, and turns out that if you press Super + T it pops up the tile manager. At least in my installation.

Hi! I'm running Arch and noticing that there is (I believe) no native tiling for portrait-orientation monitors (snap to top/bottom). I'm looking at possible solutions, which includes window managers or tile managers (?), and it seems kind of convoluted. That might be the status quo and I need to get used to it, haha.

I was going to just install AwesomeWM, but it also includes a ton of packages. Basically: Do I need those packages if my goal is just to split my portrait monitor? Window managers seem like Linux power user software in terms of how much they can do and I'm tryin' to keep it simple. I was using FancyZones on Windows.

Thank you!

Hyprland is what I've settled on after using Awesome, i3, and sway. Each of these will do what you're looking to do, as is basic window manager functionality. Even KDE/GNOME have scripts you can deploy to enable tiling, but the above mentioned are window managers dedicated to that functionality over the "desktop" experience you'd expect from Windows.

Your comparison to KDE clicked something in my brain and now I need to reframe what I thought my understanding of a WM is.

Apparently, I have installed:
  1. DE: KDE Plasma 6.6.5
  2. WM: KWin (Wayland)
However, I have 0 idea how to utilize them.

Would installing something like Hyprland (which looks very nice, wawaweewa) cause conflicts with what I currently have?

I guess I should start with the scripts you mentioned.

Thank you!

Yes. Hyprland, i3, sway, ect. are all stand alone window managers; apples to oranges compared to KDE/GNOME.

If you're running KDE Plasma with KWin, you're already capable of splitting your windows but you'll need to configure it in the KDE scripts section (It's been long enough since I'd used KDE I don't recall quite where, I apologize). But if you have KWin scripts installed you're 95% done. You might even only need to enable it.

I posted a Hyprland guide a year or so ago for Hyrpland that opens with a video explaining what it is. The entire course shows you how to configure it; though it's mildly out dated.

Try Niro or MangoWM, I currently use the latter.
Hyprland had more features but I don't want to have to deal with lua for configuration.

F33dm3bits makes a valid point, Hyprland is hands down the most appealing for aesthetics junkies like myself; but many find it too much work as it's recent shift to LUA is less than desirable to those who want something that "just works" without manual intervention. Hyprland is something you build to make your own.

Lots of options to look into it seems! Thank you!

Good video Alpha, was very easy to understand (and the 14 y/o commenting was super cute lol).

I'm going to try to ride with KDE Plasma's tiler. I was very confused because everything says that there is a widget called Tile Manager, but I don't have that, nor is it available to download.

All I had to do is press Super + T and it popped up. I am facepalming.

I have a feeling I'll outgrow this and the next steps are looking like either of the options above, so I appreciate the feedback. (:

I get a lot of comments from kids wanting to learn how to use Hyprland and it always makes me chuckle. To this day, my own kid hasn't even bothered haha. Doesn't surprise me much though. It's always uplifting to see something I've done help others.

Good luck!

I'm glad I got that closure because I was wondering if he did! Haha.
