What is the best distro for servers?

There's no really great answer to this question. All of the (your type of) server-oriented distros will be fine.

Do you mean a game server, web server, mining server, AI server, streaming server, etc?

I just put Ubuntu on my new dedicated server last night. It will work, and I'm very familiar with the ecosystem. It's not just a web server, but a server that hosts clients' websites. Ubuntu should work perfectly.

Picking the definite best would be nearly impossible but many people have a favorite.

I've been using Ubuntu Server to run a media server and store file. It's been very reliable and easy to use.

Debian is one of most well known and easy to use server distros.
Fork of it is called Devuan, and it comes without systemd, that's what I am using on my homeserver.

Would be hard to pick one that is best. Debian has never failed me so I would recommend it but Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSuse and others all will work.

On my home lab I started with Ubuntu because that's what everyone always recommends. Eventually I upgraded to Fedora, and now I'm running Alma Linux (essentially RHEL) for all of my high priority systems and Debian for all of my game servers.

How do RHEL clones perform on older hardware?

I did spin up an AlmaLinux (RHEL, basically) VM the other day. (It's for a project.)

It runs very well in a constrained VM. However, I have no desktop environment.

But, it appears to use a similar amount of resources as any other mainstream Linux with the same constraints.

Debian or BSD.
Devuan - even better.
Considering where things are going, I complemented my laptop setup by installing FreeBSD with XFCE on my older laptop couple of months back. Works perfectly well.

Now I have one with Devuan, and one with FreeBSD. Both clean, lean, with no hysteria and no excessive politics. :wine:

I fully expect M$ to parade out a Linux option, and the clueless masses will say with glossy eyes, "So THAT'S Linux, I've heard about it..." And they will nurse off the teat of M$ Linux, which will in turn corrupt search results even further for Linux related whatevers.

Linux still has its uses, but BSD is more enchanting.

It is enchanting, because it's complete.
FreeBSD Foundation maintains entire operating system - kernel, and all the tools. One team ships everything you need, there is one tool for each job, and they do the job well.
