Solved Install Programs Outside of App Center on Ubuntu 24.04.03 LTS

Hello,

Very new to Linux, and I feel like I am missing something obvious. There are a few programs that I want to install and run, but am having issues with. Tor seems like it should be the easiest and most obvious, so I will start there. It is not in the software manager (App Center) so I downloaded the .zip from the website. I extracted it in the same location, then selected the file 'start-tor-browser.desktop' and moved it to the desktop. I toggled it on as an executable program and allowed it to launch. It is not launching.

Other programs that I would like to use include LocalSend, Grayjay, Qview, and potentially some other browsers.

Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome! I removed the "Howto" prefix, it should be used for "Howto" guides.

After extraction you should run this in the terminal

./start-tor-browser.desktop

Or
simply double-click the “Start Tor Browser” icon inside the Browser folder.

Thanks for the reply! I did try running that in the terminal and it says that there is no file. I have also tried double-clicking the icon, but no luck. I haven't been able to run any of the programs that I mentioned above when I download them. Could I be missing something else obvious? Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I may look into that, but my bigger issue is that I can't get any program that I download to run.

Which distribution are you using??
Are you downloading the right packages for your distribution [.deb for Debian based distributions,.rpm for RHEL based and so on] do not try and install .exe unless it's to wine or bottles

depending on your distribution then the best download would probably be the flat hub one

some other browsers.

If you are using a standard build such as Ubuntu/Mint/MX/Parrot/Fedora/ Slackware & ETC.then you should find a plethora of browsers in the distribution repository

You have to open terminal where you extract the tar.xz
Right click on an empty space in the folder, then open terminal and execute the code. And don't move the "start-tor-browser.desktop", keep it in the extracted folder.

That worked! Thank you very much! Is there a way for me to add a desktop and/or taskbar shortcut? Not that I am being picky, just curious and trying to learn. Thanks again for the help.

Glad that it worked, you are always welcome and happy to help you. You have to install torbrowser-launcher and then right click on it from the menu and then add to panel or desktop.
