Solved LM 22.1 Installation_ executing 'grub-install/dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error.

Solved issue
Use another usb stick

I am not sure what is going on. How sure are you that the pc has booted to the usb stick, and not to the LM21.3 which is already on there

It may be worthwhile to format that drive. ext4 is the format

EDIT TO ADD: When the pc boots to the usb stisk...look at the Welcome Screen, bottom right hand corner...check the linux Mint version

Download the Mint ISO again from another mirror...sounds like a bad ISO...this does happen.

Have a look at this...

Hope this helps.

I have a meeting in 10 minutes so I have to make this short.

I went down a rabbit hole with my new friend who works in cyber security. Other than to say I just a lot went over my head, I also learned a lot too.

I'll tell later what I decided to do, with his approval that seems to have worked. I stopped installation because of my meeting. As soon as I'm done I'll be back.

Wow! I can't believe this. I mostly figured this out on my own with the information he gave me, lengthy explanations full of imagery, little stories to explain things, a lot of side tracking...

This sort of thing is Chris's forte.

Do you know if @wizardfromoz will be here today? I seem to remember seeing later in the day (my time)

(Yawn) I'm awake, or will be, after another 3 coffees. Maybe.

Our lady seems to be going OK from the last screenshot - if it is likely that she has rebooted at least once or removed and re-inserted the USB stick Gsmartcontrol will be gone as it was only installed in RAM, that's fine.

(hd0) (hd1) (hd2) (hd2,gpt3) (hd2,gpt2)(hd2,gpt1)

means the same as

/dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdc3 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdc1

The /dev/sdc numbered references indicate the existence of her previous Linux Mint install - likely her ESP (EFI system partition), her / root partition, and perhaps a swap partition.

If Sherri has gone some way into the installer, fine, but if not, choose the install option of

erase drive and install Linux Mint.

That is, provided, Sherri, there is no data you need from the LM 21 version.

I'm off to install another distro, likely back in an hour.

I'm not sure my meeting is going to happen. My meeting is with `a lady who's husband went into a coma the other day. She's not answering her phone...

I'm not going to start a fresh installation yet. I'll give it another half hour. In the meantime this is my idea of what happened based on my new knowledge...

  • My friend (who won't join this forum BTW!!!)...
    • From the Grub messages he said it was bad install.
    • It was in a boot loop, couldn't find installation files
    • He told me it usually happens with corrupted installation files, a bad HDD or bad thumb drive.
    • The disks passed health checks, so...
  • The installation files were probably corrupted
    • I originally downloaded them using the LM torrent download
      • It took a LONG TIME TO DOWNLOAD!!
        • Maybe some seeds were corrupted, files didn't download properly??
          • I didn't verify the authenticity

THIS TIME...

Disconnecting the 2nd HDD didn't help anything, I still couldn't get into BIOS. The splash screen for my MOBO clearly states that 'F2' and 'Delete' should be used to enter BIOS (UEFI), neither of which were working.

1743721542784.png

My friend kept saying 'F12'.

'F12' got me into BIOS. I didn't make any changes.....

When I inserted the newly created thumb drive I got the following results...

I'm going to make another coffee before moving forward ;-)

Yes, it's gone but I know to find it!

I can't believe any of this actually makes sense to me... Not everything, but definitely more than it did earlier today...

...erase drive and install Linux Mint.

This is my plan

That is, provided, Sherri, there is no data you need from the LM 21 version

Everything I need is backup.

More questions in a post coming soon...

Go into bios and look to see if secure boot is turned Off.....if it is On...turn it off

Given the progress I've made do I still need to do this?
Same with fastboot if you can find it

Or this? And yes I saw it in the boot menu too, with a lot of other crap!

If that produces no joy, boot into the Live version, menu, Boot Repair, open that and follow the basic steps through to repair boot

This from my notes:
Boot the pc to that usb stick. Then look for 'Boot Repair' in the menu... Open it....just click through...the latest version is not important It will scan...may take a few minutes
Click 'no' if it offers to modify the mount point of any EXTRA drive/s you have installed. You only want to fix the boot for the drive your OS is installed on.
It will scan again.
It will then come to a smallish screen saying :
Repair the boot of the computer
Click on recommended repair
It will do its thing automatically

Anything on screen, after it has finished the repair is window dressing....it is unnecessary to write stuff down etc etc etc
Just REBOOT. Allow the pc to do its normal boot up routine boot to the usb again and attempt the Install Linux Mint again

Maybe do these things if my new USB drive doesn't work?

I didn't see anything in the installation guide that would give me concern. Last year I used the EXT4 extension to format my HDD, so that's already done.

I'm going to go ahead with installation....

C U on the other side of the install.

I'll remain logged in here (I am on Linux Mint 22.1 'Xia' ), but I'll be in and out tweaking my new install.

Well done.

You have maybe 15 minutes to change any Timeshift settings, or it may take its first snapshot on the hour, and that likely be stored on the first available partition which it see as your root (system) partition.

I'll come back soon.

I'm so excited I forgot about Timeshift!

Now for updates!

Rob made the little green and white "Solved" facility available to us 2 years ago, and IMO, the only thing better than seeing those, where we have been able to help someone... is when the OP themself has been able to work it out.

Very uplifting, I find.

I have to admit I didn't even think to look for anything to identify my issue as resolved. The real reason I know about it is that someone told me I should make that change to a thread last year. I think I was annoying this person!

I suspect that person is easily annoyed with idiocy, thoughtlessness, self-centeredness, arrogance, stupidity.... Has been here forever, recently moved up, the fourth letter of the alphabet is the first of five characters of identity...

After posting this image here, I sent if to my new cyber security geek friend at 8:26 pm
