Lightest Linux distros, easy for noob, with virtual winOS?

i'll leave this for when you get back to it if it is still of interest
Thanks, it is. But other than thought I even have less time this week to experiment than anticipated. Will see when I come to it.

windows fast startup can affect wifi in linux so it may be worth a try to disable it and see if that helps:
On the quick I didn't find this setting in Win11 by search, and translating the used terms to the German interface. On the other hand, would fast startup even work, when - as I do - always unplug the powersupply?

zorin os xfce aims to be a lokalike win.
Thanks. Its one of the many distro isos downloaded already. I'll see when I find time to try them all.

On the other hand, would fast startup even work, when - as I do - always unplug the powersupply?
unfortunately i don't know enough about the technical side of fast startup to be able to answer that. i was never quite sure how (if i am understanding it correctly) writing the system state to a hibernation file affected the wifi adapter. some time ago (so i don't have a link) i had read a description that said it had something to do with wake-on-lan.

this article is specific to fast startup in windows 11: https://www.windowscentral.com/soft...ion-how-to-disable-fast-startup-on-windows-11

i didn't notice any obvious differences compared to how i had checked the fast startup setting previously in windows 10. it does have a section that says the fast startup option might be missing if hibernation is not enabled. it offers a method to check and see:
1. Open Start.
2. Search for Command Prompt.
3. Right-click the top result and select the Run as administrator option.
4. Type the following command to view the power states supported on your computer and press Enter: powercfg /availablesleepstates
when i do that in my windows 10 virtual machines, i see similar output to the image below those instructions:
Fast Startup
Hibernation is not available.

Newbe here with first post. I've became increasing annoyed about Window notebooks the last 20 years. Before that no computers, travelling for 10 years before.

Whenever I tried linuxes on a USB, I always came to the point where I realized, I had to invest too steep in a learning curve, I'm not willing to. Like learning a new language - worth learning a whole culture and interesting people - but for a machine? I still prefer to meditate and communicate with real people for hours every day. Beside work, too few hours left..

What beside the monopoly, etc. annoyed me about windows machines the most, was that each notebook in those years had minor breakdowns, like usually the battery weakening or dying, the touchdisplay not working or broke, or the keys one by one not functioning anymore. Considered by the manufacturer irrepareable, or with the passing of time this technology always cheaper to buy a new one, instead of repair.

3 years ago with the last irreparable one I quit. Only used a android tablet since, and was surprised by its low-energy footprint: 7 Watts recharging, half that when charged. I considered Shiftbook bundle next, because modularly build and repairable. Sadly too powerful for my humble 95% use of browser, office and multimedia. And right now turned out with horrible battery runtime. And much too expensive for me.

So I had to decide now - tablet starts to pass out too - and bought a mini PC (8GB DDR, 128GB M.2 SSD, J4129, Windows10; for 120,- only), a touch display (11.6 inch), a simple keyport, mouse, and a 20AH powerback I already had. Therefore everything cheaply replaceable, without having to dispose a whole notebook each time, due to these 3 parts always broken after somr time - but separate now. Duh, took me a long time to realize something so simple

My plan, don't know if it works: Taking a simple light-weight distro for the 95% of time I use the computer, and run windows in a WM whenever at my wits-end. So a light as possible most of the use time. For that task: which tiny linux is easy on beginners with intuitive use for browser, office, media and has OS virtualization already included?

From an article, these seem from the lightest upward: TinyCore (not for beginners), Slax, Puppy, Elive, wattOZ, Slitaz, Debian.. Does anybody know if any of those could fulfill my requirements?

Or in a similiar region of system-requirements - almost nought nowadays - any distro close which would instead?

Reading up on these I found Slitax interesting, because as a server too, could be worked with over the internet. Would it work for me?

so the one command in regards to your wifi adapter can be two commands:

journalctl -b -g 03:00.0
and
journalctl -b -g 8821ce

the command for your ethernet could be these three
These commands gave each an output, I took pics of them with my iphone. However, for an unknown reason wasn't able to transfer as before at the moment. If your still interested, I could send as PM later.

I did however realize that the WLAN of my new mini-PC is really its weakest part. Usually didn't had problems to conect the ipone, android or an desolat Win7 with each other. With the mini-PC it only works very erratic with Windows 11, shows 3 wlan only, of otherwise dozens something. And only fully worked with the strong WLAN at my working place, where I luckily could download all the ISOs of distros.

Interestingly, there where only 2 amazon comments of dozens satisfied, which mentioned a weak WLAN for this mini-PC.
However, till now I could avoid to send back any online purchase, and I would rather like to keep it that way. With the intention with my setup to have something more sustainable, not to right away having to trash again.

Finally was really stunned, that I forgot everything about SIM-USB dongles. Found an old 3G stick I had forgotten, and it worked for both, windows and q4os, right away. I choose the full setup to see how such would look. Sadly, only Google Chrome intalled with the standard setup. Therefore tried to additonally install Firefox. Took in total 3 hours of downloading it all, and in the end the download of Firefox interrupted and didn't complete. But now it was too late to explore further. Will continue on an other day.

I'm charmed. At least this distro - without much testing yet - appears so clean and really well organized to help a newbe find everything with ease. Though I found the installed applications, interestingly Chrome wasn't listed, wanted to deinstall right away. Next time trying.

The installed full version of Q4OS already already brought me to my limits. Beside not finding the wlan - which meanwhile I solved with an old 3G-USB dongle - it surprisingly installed GoogleChrome as browser.

Multiple and long tries to install Firefox always failed because it never completed its download funktionaql. Additionally GoogleChrome for an unknown reason to me, wasn't even where all installed programs are listed, and one would be able to deinstall..

now in the uefi boot menu, nothing changed, no mention of the distro to choose from, just the usual order: hard disk: Wind...
NVME, CD, SD, USB and Network. By the way, I forgot how to change that order, which keys to use for that?

An other greater problem with my hardware-setup - with separate miniPC, touch display and keyport - seem to be that the usual way to change booting to USB first, doesn't work at all! In the bios it allows to select, but +/- doesn't works. Arrow up or down only deselects again, and just moves to the next item, without changing the order.

Therefore I saw no other way to reach different OSes to select on an USB-stick, other than through something like Q4OS with its own selection menu at boot-up reached with F7. Therefore I try not the full, but only basic version of Q4OS, and now am at repeated attempts failing, just as when I first tried. Seems with slow downloads the installing files too easily get corrupted..

where are you trying to download firefox from? in Discover, i can see a listing for firefox-esr (Extended Support Release) if i search for it exactly by that name. for some reason searching for just firefox doesn't seem to work.
Additionally GoogleChrome for an unknown reason to me, wasn't even where all installed programs are listed, and one would be able to deinstall.
i'm not sure why it's not listed with the other installed programs. that might be because it is installed from an outside source. i searched for it with
Code:
apt list '*chrome*' -i
Listing... Done
google-chrome-stable/stable,now 115.0.5790.110-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
and if you wanted to uninstall it, you could test that with
Code:
apt remove -s google-chrome-stable
the -s simulates the removal. if that seems to work and is what you want, you should be able to remove it with
Code:
sudo apt remove google-chrome-stable
in case it is of interest, there seems to be another web browser installed called Konqueror.

Therefore I try not the full, but only basic version of Q4OS, and now am at repeated attempts failing, just as when I first tried. Seems with slow downloads the installing files too easily get corrupted..
Seems exactly the case. Whenever starting the Q4OS installer, it starts to download additional installation files from within Windows. If that progress shows it would still take above an hour, the final installation always failed with the irresponsive black-screen with the text I already posted. When it first worked, it showed 12 minutes download-time. Just now under 10 minutes, and from such short installation downloads, the install works perfectly. This time I didn't choose the full-install, so google chrome was left out to begin with. Now I can choose what to add.

Might be a server-overload? That when slow it always produced corrupted installation files?

However the main objective with Q4OS was to have a different boot-menu than through the in my case inresponsive bios boot-menu. Now it shows the bios starting with booting, where I can select Q4OS boot menu with F7 - but alternatingly also boots directly without choice into Windows11. Does anyone know why this could be so erratic now?

By the way, yesterday there were a major update for Win11. I do feel at times like this dude on the new log-in page.

An other windows installer OS - I tried before Q4OS bootup worked again - was endlessOS, which also has its own boot-dialog at start-up. But that proved a bid too early ending.. The following was the only menu found on its surface. Though wlan worked even out of the box:

Like now o_O

Just realized my 29GB USB by now with 22 ISOs of all light Linux distros - including windows11 - made with portable vintoy, in my clueless adempts to make it bootable again, all unformated again.

i realize you said endless didn't work so this may be superfluous. depending on what you are looking for in the long term, the license (or terms of use) of endless os is something that would give me pause: https://linuxreviews.org/Endless_OS#The_License

Thanks for making me aware. Deinstalled right away, initially wanted to keep it just as a fal-lback OS selection menu at boot-up.

Only remember seeing and installing there a firefox, don't remember if it was ESR. Will take a look when booting it up again. But now I'm bussy at downloading the ISOs again. Am at my workingplace with fast WLAN.

you're welcome. i was creating a virtual machine to check it out. when i got to the license, i deleted the vm and iso. hopefully you can find something that better suits your needs and works with your wifi adapter.

Stick arrived today, and it worked right away by by-passing the weak wlan of the mini-PC. At least with windows11, since I've haven't had the oportunity to test with any linux at depth. But it seems the seller seems happily providing support for making it work with linux.

Dieser Linux WLAN Stick ist kompatibel mit Linux kernels up to 6.2, Ubuntu 22.10~ 16.04, Debian 11/10/9/8, Linux Mint 21/20/19/18, LMDE 5/4/3/2/1, Kali Linux, Pop!_OS, Raspberry Pi OS (Raspbian) 11/10/9/8, GNOME, MATE, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Budgie, Kylin, MX Linux, Elementary OS, Zorin OS, KDE neon, antiX Linux, Q4OS, Parrot OS, PureOS, Bodhi, deepin, Linux Lite, SparkyLinux, Peppermint OS, Devuan; Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7

Didn't make a difference.

I was too much fixated on the bios boot order menu. Actually unter safe and exit at the bottom of the page there would have been each device mentioned to boot from next, select, save and exit. So only now I'm able to do without the boot-menu from Q4OS. Nevertheless it helped me to finally get there.

in Discover, i can see a listing for firefox-esr
Wasn't there in Discover of my Q4OS.

Don't know why that changed general behaviour. But found tips, which recommends to hold the Shift key, upon clicking reboot. And this way it always brings up the boot menu.

i think i recall you were trying to avoid the command line, but in case it is of interest you could try

apt list firefox-esr

if your output looks like
Code:
apt list firefox-esr
Listing... Done
firefox-esr/oldstable-security 102.13.0esr-1~deb11u1 amd64

then you should be able to install it with

sudo apt install firefox-esr

it sounds like you found a functional way around it, but you had mentioned a windows 11 update in a previous post. i haven't dual booted windows and a linux distribution in a while. however, from time to time i have read posts that mention a windows update can sometimes make it harder to get into linux.
