i have fiddled and looked and searched all over this. I can see lines in the various places...on pulse audio I think....the lines are moving as if sound is playing....but there is no sound!!

It is new to us...but is actually quite old....2009 approx

No analogue in that place....only what shows below.....clicking beside digital stereo Iec958 etc does not produce a drop down

If i click on test sound....there is no result left or right

the orange line right at the bottom....is the "moving" line which indicates sound is...."somewhere"....I hope...

Have you tried using ear buds?

No...good thought...I will give it a try

damn !!...it works !!

Now, how do I convince it to operate normally ?

You may need to use speakers with a built in amp.
E.G.

You may be right. That makes some sense to me I know zero about all things sound.....I am beginning t suspect there is no speaker inside the tower at all. That probably serves me right for just "assuming" there would be because everything else in the house does.
I will pick up a cheapy and figure it out from there

@Hillbilly H ....thanks for your suggestion re the earbuds/headphones...if you had not suggested that i would still be sitting here staring at it !

@Condobloke , when you open pavu control, go to "Configuration tab" and set thnings like on my screenshot and pay special attention to the red circle on the right - the padlock icon locks the configuration to the chosen settings, so that it won't reset after reboot.

Took care of the above previously

I have a pair of speakers on the way

I like that one of Rado's, though, will bookmark this thread.

I only get a sound issue maybe once every couple of years, but given the number of distros in my stable, that tip could be very useful.

Thanks @rado84 ;)

Do you mean these ?

Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-91-generic running: yes
Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes

Yes, one sound server (whichever you choose) is enough.

I am 90% sure they will work

As you suggested....try the headset.....and they work....therefore , because the speakers are plug in (3.5mm) to the same place.....they will work

As per advice from @Rado ....":Open sound settings and choose Analog audio output."

I did just that, and the headphones work like a charm....only headphones.

Regardless of what I try, i do not receive sound from a speaker.....hence the purchase of a stand alone speaker

@Condobloke :-

It's exactly how I've always done audio on a desktop, Brian.

I've got an ancient Goodman's speaker system.....active (its own built-in amp), along with a pair of good-quality "mids" and a sub-woofer. Dates back to the early 2000s, and was originally intended for an MP3 player! Hence why the ONLY 'input' is a metre-long lead with a 3.5 mm jack plug.....

I extended that with a 3-metre long M-F extension lead.....and run it from the desktop's headphone 'out' socket. Works a treat, and even after 20-odd years they STILL sound good.

It's a method that'll always work.

Mike. ;)

I've just installed Cinnamon 21.3 as a VM and the sound works fine...the only thing I did was increase the volume.

It works with Digital Output too...just tried it but I don't know if it would work as a clean install.

It updates regularly. Presents zero problems.
