The HoloISO project to create a desktop similar to Steam Deck based on Linux has not ceased to exist. However, the original version of HoloISO (based on SteamOS 3) is no longer supported.

This is an unofficial project that is an adaptation of SteamOS 3 for regular computers. Valve has not released an official SteamOS3 ISO image for general PC use, and HoloISO fills this gap.

Description:
The project is based on Arch Linux and integrates SteamOS components that are used on the Steam Deck. Some features:
Using the Steam Deck UI user interface (formerly called Big Picture Mode).
The Proton compatibility layer is used to run Windows—based games on Linux.
Optimization of the interface for control using the gamepad and touch input.

Functions:
HoloISO allows you to:
Install games from Steam, including those that are not officially adapted for Linux. They work through the built-in Steam Proton emulator.
Use desktop mode with full access to the KDE and Arch repositories.
Support the traditional use of Linux: productivity software, development tools, media creation.

Problems:
Some problems encountered when using HoloISO:
Incorrect operation with NVIDIA GPUs — proprietary drivers are required.
Problems with working with Intel Arc GPUs or integrated GPUs — Gamescope and MESA configuration is required.
Installation errors — The ISO is loaded only if it is written to a flash drive using one of the four applications (balenaEtcher, RosaImageWriter, Fedora Media Writer or dd with a block size of 4 MB).

Development:
In January 2024, the creator of HoloISO announced that the original version of the project was closed — it was replaced by an immutable version. The developer archived the original HoloISO page on GitHub so that it would not receive updates and would not be maintained.

Where to download the latest version of the ISO image on the project's GitHub page: github.com/HoloISO.
