Ubuntu 26.04 is designed from the ground up for AI developers.
The new Ubuntu Linux comes with AI-specific dev environments.
This Linux also comes with Rust-based memory safety built in.

In London, Canonical founder and CEO Mark Shuttleworth argued that Ubuntu 26.04, Ubuntu Linux, is the operating system for the "AI agentic era."

As for the AI bit, I don't dislike AI in and of itself. I think it's still early going. I think a lot of people don't really understand it. Then, I think a lot of businesses have been trying to shoehorn AI into their processes without a lot of insight and without thinking about the future of AI.

I do not think AI is a 'passing fad'. Richard Stalman was brought to MIT to work with AI all the way back in the early 70s. Not just in the 70s, but in 1971. This is not a new concept. We have had major breakthroughs in math, programming, and hardware. That makes 'AI' easier right now.

Who knows where it'll end up? I think there's some great science fiction out there that is both fiction and a potential outcome.

In an ideal world, it'd be a Utopia. However, the word Utopia was popularized in Thomas More's book by the same name (and published in 1516). The book concluded with the idea that a Utopia simply can't exist. It's a great philosophical work, but not an easy book to read.


Man, imagine if we eliminated the need to work for money. I don't think we'd stagnate. I think the opposite is true. We spend our most optimal years laboring for money. Imagine what we could do with all the resources we need being met. Imagine a life in a post-scarcity world. Sure, some folks would laze about. Who cares? Others would thrive and prosper. They'd write, paint, build, create, etc...

Ah, well... Let's not go off the rails this early in the thread.

Moving on...

As far as Snaps are concerned, my opinion has not changed. I don't mind them. They're fine by me. You can even trivially revert to a previous version if you discover a problem with the current version. That's handy stuff. No, I don't mind the additional disk space. I'm not running low on disk space, and won't have that problem for the foreseeable future.

Rust... Again, my opinion hasn't changed. This one is pretty basic. While I've done some programming in the past, I would not call myself a good programmer. I know the 'executive brief' when it comes to Rust. Knowing what I DO NOT know, I defer to the experts. There are a lot of smart people, and they've decided that Rust is good enough (maybe even preferred) for the kernel. They are smarter than I am, so I'll defer to them. (Much like how I'm not going to argue with my doctor, my lawyer, or my accountant. Oh, and my wife. I'm going to listen to the experts. I am not qualified to offer an opinion.)

Edited to Add: So far, I've only used 26.04 as a server. I've yet to upgrade to anything to that version.
 
Note: I decided to smush two threads into one, as they're all about Ubuntu's 26.04 release.
