Testers for next inxi (pinxi) - USB, Bluetooth, USB upgrades

I think I found it, L2 was simply never assigned if missing, and this would basically never trigger except for ARM cpus without L2, or BSDs that did not get L2 detected.

With latest patch this 'should' be working, it was basically an assumption based on the fact that essentially all intel/amd type cpus report their their L2 in /proc/cpuinfo, so this tiny assumption had remained hidden for all these years. I don't see anywhere where L3 was assigned to L2 however, so I think that's maybe not related. Basically for most cpus on linux, L2 i s always available, and usually but not always, L1 and L3 only came from dmidecode, with the exception of Elbrus cpus, which provide all three variants, actually more, since they have several L1 types.

There was a further bsd only condition that triggered because the more advanced logic used for linux can't work without all the required data, so i t had a simpler default, which resulted in for stuff that didn't have L1/2/3 cache data in dmesg.boot or sysctl output, it would never show the data, and I never found this because testing in vm's doesn't give much dmi data, if any.

Almost my bedtime, but tomorrow I'll run through whichever you prefer: pinxi -zyv8? Or the debug command? Or something else? After pinxi -U, of course! :)

Probably one last full set of -yzv8 to make sure I'm not missing anything should do it I think, Note that for freebsd/dragonfly, cpu L1/2/3 cache data will only show if root since it comes from dmidecode, but that's fine, the trick was to track down the missing cpu cache data for these systems. I modified it to if bsd, then always try the cpu data from dmidecode, if no other cache data was found, that seems safest.

Note that for freebsd/dragonfly, cpu L1/2/3 cache data will only show if root since it comes from dmidecode, but that's fine
Do you want any tests run as a regular user?

Data is looking amazing, there's never been this much shown, just for your own benefit, take any linux install, run pinxi -v8 on it, and you'll see the progress, you can also take inxi on any of these bsds and run it side by side, and you'll see the differences quite clearly. But the BSDs have never gotten this many fields completed before, not even close.

More fine tunings, I'd noticed that the data had bytes / sector for disks, but didn't add that, now that's working for openbsd (have to manually calculate that from sector count/disk size). While doing this, I realized that I'd been sending the disk size tool the MB measurement instead of M, which resulted in the wrong disk size in GiB (MB triggers units o f 1000, MiB or M 1024). So this also fixes wrong disk sizes for the bsds, all of them, which is good.

Inxi has future proofed should the bsd guys ever stop doing that, so they can use MB, M, or MiB, and inxi will treat those as the same thing.

Note that regular user for freebsd and openbsd should now see disk block size for physical, only with root smartctl will you se e logical too.

I'd grown faintly aware that this data could be grabbed, note that the game here is to fill in as many missing items as possible while maintaining a reasonable code base.

For OpenBSD, they don't list block size per se, but you can get that from disk size total in KiB and sector total counts, that's how I realized that the math was wrong, I was ending up with block size of 500, which isn't possible.

These changes are live in pinxi, it's getting pretty granular here, but that's how it goes when you focus on something this much, you see more and more, and realize that there are actual sources for this data in bsds if you're willing to get convoluted enough.

Note that dragonfly doesn't have this data unless gpart or smartctl are installed, but the others do.

I remain puzzled by one thing, when I login to console, all my bsd test systems are showing the 'running-in: tty [x]' item, but none of yours are, there's something I'm still missing there, I don't know if it's based on the systems being in a vm, which it should definitely not be, or something else, that is unknown. This is the remaining thing I cannot yet explain, it's an odd one, the tty data is kind of fundamental in a sense, and I don't understand why it isn't showing in yours, there must be some difference there, maybe it's related to having root only login? That's the only difference I can see, I always add my user to them when setting it up. When I su - to root, it shows the tty fine still, nothing I do can make it stop showing that.

Latest patch is changing the way tty is handled, there was a case where it might have trimmed off the entire value, so I've changed it to only trim off /dev/tty and leave the rest, that will also be more precise since there are various types of ttys out there.

This might correct the issue, not sure, it will lead to improved accuracy about which tty is actually being used, inxi used to remove all the stuff, but that led to lack of clarity I think, and may be the cause of this failure.

take any linux install, run pinxi -v8 on it, and you'll see the progress
It looks great! :)

I was very happy with the Vulnerabilities section... and my old computer was unaffected by any of those that you examine. Sweet! :D

In most cases lately, I boot into BSD and never load X at all. Nomad is an exception, and from it I have been using CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a tty for testing. I have gotten better at mounting a USB to copy the data outputs to post here instead of emailing them to myself. ;)

All of my test setups are BIOS/MBR except the HP laptop, which is UEFI... but not sure if hard drive is GPT or MBR. I'll look into that.

Shall I update pinxi and run through them all again (-zyv8) As root?

Might as well, yes, I keep saying no, I only need to see x or y but then each time I notice something else in one of the lines.

Success means the Info line is showing the running-in: tty item.

This fix means I removed a kind of silly output limit where I'd only show the shell number, but since valid tty numbers can be hexidecimal, like say, ttyaf, that was always a bad idea, and it actually matters which tty you are on, say, a serial connection, a usb serial connection, etc, these all have different letters attached.

No problem for me. This gets easier each time. Back soon.

OK, here they come... pinxi-109, all as root...

OpenBSD has started booting to a graphical login... not sure why, but that's okay with me. I'm using CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a root tty, as I'm also doing with NomadBSD.

But no running: in tty

Ok, now I am truly puzzled, my bsd installs were largely barebones except for when I added the xorg/openbox parts.

I should have asked you this before, but on each of those, which are still not showing the Console: tty ... or running-in: tty ...
can you run the 'tty' command? and just show that output. Also run this to double check something:

tty && echo yes || echo no

that will show if the output goes to stdout or stderr.

This absence is utterly inexplicable to me at this point, but it has to be something, because you are managing to make it always happen, which can't be a coincidence, yet we've done largely the same installs, tested in the same ways, give or take. Yet in no case are your installs returning tty data.

Nomad is pre-made, so it has whatever they designed. OpenBSD and the Asus have X and a few apps, like Firefox, Thunderbird, a few others. The HP laptop with FreeBSD 13 is very barebones, no Xorg or anything.

Back soon with the tty command results....

Will add each with edits to this post....

3 of the 4 show this output below:
/dev/ttyv0
yes

OpenBSD gives this:
/dev/ttyC0
yes
