On more than one occasion my effort to find my way in this new world has introduced me to software that, although established among the Linux community for quite some time, I had never heard of. Clearly I need to consider other sources as I build a knowledge base more applicable to this landscape, and was hoping people would share there "go to spots," with me.

I might be a little late to the bandwagon, so Welcome to the Fourms!

LibreOffice is a good office suite for most major systems,
Krita=Digital art,
And you usually can find a bunch of different stuff on flathub and the various software centers shipped with different distros.
Just look into what you would like to try first- then you can choose what you do from there.
I Hope this helps!

I use Linux Mint 22.3

Its Software repository has a vast array of all kinds of software.

Sadly it is not catalogued, so finding a software for a particular use can be a matter of luck/research/keeping ones eyes open when reading others posts.

I don't understand your thread, but presumably you're seeking software recommendations...

Every area has its favorite:
GIMP for image editing,
VLC for audio,
VSCode for coding
OBS Studio for videos

etc. the list can be very long one.

Accept the favs or deny, in time you'll have your own favs.

They come up with some weird, strange names for software that doesn't offer a clue as to what it actually does. So there's a web site that helps us figure out what these apps do: https://www.opensourcealternative.to/

You can type something in the search bar and the site will list open-source alternatives that you might find in your Linux distro's repositories.

When I was new to all this, I was struck by all the cool stuff - I guessed it must be cool - that I couldn't guess what it was. It's one of the reasons I recommend Linux Lite to new users: How is a novice supposed to know, for example, that "Thunar" is a file manager? All I know about Thunar is it's the name of Thor's hammer! But what's it doing in my computer?

Linux Lite solves that problem by naming Thunar "File Manager." Little thoughtful things like naming apps for what they do is a big reason I recommend Linux Lite for new users. But check out the web site for a start.
