Running an older system linux 2.4.33 System V init

When booting most linux systems show what is being booted line by line with and [ OK ] in green after every line if it worked.

This one just boots into runlevel 3, says so and then goes quiet.

The service command alone seems to work, service sshd start gives an [ OK ] in green but when booting does not.

Machine is running lilo with quiet and splash gone. How do I turn this back on display behavior back on?

Thanks Homer

Which distro are you using? E.g. Slackware and Gentoo use a different runlevel numbering system.

Can you type anything on the screen? What happens if you type startx ?

The system is Mandrake 9.1, the instant it says
INIT: Entering runlevel 3
it goes dead silent.
Before that it outputs fine, prints out everything going on as usual, the instant
rc.sysinit ends and INIT 3 starts, the printout ends. Later during init 6 shutdown, nothing prints either.
This is running lilo with quiet removed, and /etc/sysconfig/init says graphical.
Yes I can type on the screen right after runlevel 3 starts.
There is no X on the system.
Thanks Homer

Maybe silly question: Why are you using a release that came out in 2003?

Does your computer have a make and model? Or what are its basic specs?

I haven't seen sysVinit run levels in a few years. :)
