Sometimes posters ask about employment opportunities in the linux world. This item from phoronix shows a couple of positions with the following information:
Position 1 is for a Linux kernel engineer working to drive Intel-optimized system software for the Linux ecosystem. The senior-level position will be working on Intel drivers and low-level system software, without going deeper into the specifics. The Oregon position will have a salary range from $196~277k USD.

Position 2 is another Linux kernel engineer working on various OS internals to work on unnamed Intel device drivers and Linux kernel optimizations for specific hardware platforms. This position has a salary range of $146~206k USD.
I guess the salaries offered are at the higher end, but they do appear to be quite lucrative. The ladder to climb to reach such a level though is very tall indeed. Nevertheless, it looks like there is a career path of sorts.

I had to approve this one - my guess is that it exceeded the character limit Rob has set, but I will look into it.

Sure, only problem is rarely who is developer, but there are also many positions for administrators and what not.

I've been looking at such offers out of interest a few times, although I could qualify here and there because not all positions are demanding in what one needs to know, problem is almost all of them also require high school in computer science.

This is not like with other jobs where your knowledge or willingness is enough.

Anyone could potentially learn to qualify for a job, but completing CS is not that easy.
