What is the difference/purpose of .mozilla profile vs .cache/profile? I only mess with .mozilla/profile when I move my stuff to a new installation or new profile but should I also be using .cache/profile?

linux .mozilla profile .cache profile
I just use the .mozilla profile, similarly to you, but I might try some of the material from the article some time.
Advise you take a Timeshift snapshot first so you can rollback if need be.
