(If you're familiar with the latest drama in my life!.... I have some time and want to get this done!)

The plan.
  • Restore a SnapShot to my 2TB drive
  • Create a partition for TimeShift snap shots
  • On startup, boot into LM on the 2TB drive

My 2TB drive can not be selected as a target device in TimeShift to restore a Snapshot.

What I have to work with
  • I wiped my 2TB drive, rewritten entirely with '0's
  • Formatted as EXT4
  • NOT mounted.
    • I suspect this might be why I can't select it as a target device. I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm right. Or wrong

Disks (TimeShift notes and images follow)
  • The 2TB drive is not mounted or partitioned.

  • Mount Options

  • Other Options
    • I don't know what to do with any of these

TimeShift

  • The 2TB drive is grayed out, can't be selected.
  • Target drive.jpg

  • Bootloader Options
    • I can select the 2TB drive
    • I don't know if this would work.

How do I make this happen?

clik on the black triangle/whatever...as marked with the red arrow

That will mount it.
Then see if you can see it as a point to restore to

If you can, then you could install LM21.3 to the 2TB....and then restore your latest snapshot over the top of that install

I am a bit tired this morning, but I think that will work

.I'll let you know!

It didn't work. Don't hurry yourself with any of this. I have something now. It works just fine and I do have other things to get done.

Reboot.

I'm going to wait until tomorrow. Maybe later tonight. I'm just tired now.

/dev/sda needs a bit more prep work.

I'll leave this until you are fresh, but it will involve creating two (2) to three (3) partitions on /dev/sda , depending on where you want to store your Timeshift snapshots. I would advocate clearing space on /dev/sdb, or if /dev/sdb is an SSD, we could look at an alternative.

Timeshift cannot create partitions, of its own accord.

So for a minimum, you want on /dev/sda
  • a /dev/sda1 - 512 MB, vfat or fat32, for your EFI System Partition, flagged as boot,esp
  • a /dev/sda2 - rest of the drive, or else, say 50 GB or your choice, in EXT4
To make these partitions I use GParted, if your GParted will recognise the /dev/sda I would advocate same.

My SSD looks as follows, you can see "Victoria' at bottom

You can see that my ESP is pretty full, but with you just having the one distro, that used figure might be a little as 30 - 50 MiB

I think three things.
  1. I'm really glad I didn't start this on my own.
  2. I'm going to wait on this until I'm done packing
  3. I'm going to wait on this until I'm settled in Ohio
