I've downloaded Inkscape but I have no idea what to use to open it with when it says I need to edit properties. I'm very new to Linux & am completely lost. I've done what it says to do in the terminal but I keep getting this message:
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

Do you lean towards or are a graphic Artist ? I haven't used Inkscape but i have used scribus quite a bit

What Linux distribution are you using?
Inkscape should be in the software repositories of all distros. Just download and install it using your system’s package management software.

So for Debian, or Debian derived distros (*buntu, mint, Pop, MX etc. etc), you could open a terminal and install using:
Bash:
sudo apt install inkscape

For Red-Hat, or Red Hat derived distro’s you would use:
Bash:
sudo dnf install inkscape
