Any Member here at Linux.org knows I am no fan of the 'buntus. Recently, my son told me about the OS his workplace uses and said I might like it because it's simple and "not bogged down with a bunch of BS."
To my surprise, he was right! It had all I really needed and wanted except GIMP, which was easy enough to install once I edited the /etc/apt/sources.list file by simply uncommenting two or three sources. I skipped the dist-upgrade for fear of installing unnecessary bs. iN SHORT, it is the best performing and simplest 'buntu I hav used in more than a decade.
Try it out! It's found at sourceforge.
