Okay this is something completely new to me. Several problems all at once and they must be related. I'm running MX 23.6 Libretto. (1) When I tried to shut down my computer last night the shut down option was greyed out and the only option was to log out. Finally I shut down the computer by pressing the hardware button on my desktop HP 290 G4. The computer shut down but when I restarted there were other problems. 2) The networking is now disabled. In Networking Assistant WiFi status is "WiFi Hardware switch is off". But this is a desktop and to the best of my knowledge there is no such switch. 3) Also, the volume icon says "not connected to the Pulse Audio server." (4) Finally and perhaps most important I can't open either Gnome Disks, MX disk manager or Gparted. I was looking at Gnome Disks right before all these problems occurred. Does that mean there's a problem with the system disk? what have I done and how can I fix it? Help very much appreciated!

G'day PIP436, welcome to Linux.org

Drives:
Local Storage: total: 298.09 GiB used: 37.69 GiB (12.6%)
SMART Message: Unable to run smartctl. Root privileges required.

Does that mean you have already tried to run GSmartctl ?....just to be absolutely clear....this is the original HDD (Hard Drive) in the PC ?
Finally I shut down the computer by pressing the hardware button on my desktop HP 290 G4.
There is mention in the specs you provided, of a Lenovo laptop....yet you have referred ^^^^ to a HP desktop.

I assume it is the HP....and I would tend to agree with you....the hard drive is suspect.

if you have any valuable info/data on that HD, this would be a good time to transfer it to an external drive....copy and paste or drag and drop is fine.

To run gsmartctl successfully, you will need the usb stick you used to install the OS.........Boot to that sub stick and then access GSmart from there. Run the quick test first and follow up with the slow test.

let us know the outcome

Thanks Condobloke for your kind welcome and advice. In the end, I decided to reinstall MX Linux. Now everything is working correctly! Sometimes that's easier than trying to to fix what I screwed up. Oh and the wrong system info was because I without thinking copied from the laptop I was writing on since the HP desktop with the probm had no WiFi.

Glad its up and running for you.

We al know the feeling...screwing up is almost a necessary after effect of tinkering !

Are you familiar with Timeshift ?
