I did a search before posting and I see that Rescatux was already discussed on Linux.org a while ago ,
but some folks here ( and elsewhere ) continue to post about boot-loader problems , so it may help someone .
I've had plenty of these type of utilities in my tool kit for many years , eg. Supergrub , Ultimate Boot and others .
Rescatux isn't exactly new ( the current version is from late 2017 ) but more recent than those others .
It's very impressive , with a graphical front end , and so far it has helped me to repair many GNU/Linux systems ,
and that "other" OS ( and also dual-boot systems ) without fuss or failure .
A previous must-have for me was "Grub Doctor" ( aka Boot Loader Repair Utility ) , which is included
in the Parted Magic package .
Recent versions of that are no longer free , and now have a strange subscription type of deal ,
but older free versions are still available with a bit of searching .
All of the packages mentioned have Gparted bundled in , which is pretty handy for making certain which
disk and partition the various weapons are pointing at !
Rescatux is here :-
https://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/
I rate it highly , and recommend it to anybody who does these types of repair .
If it's any help to anyone , I also have a short tutorial on how to deal with the dreaded black-screen
of " Grub Rescue "
