I think this is something specific to my machine not so much a Linux / Win issue. I created a liveboot today, Xubuntu 22.04 on an external 2TB SSD and the machine would not boot at all. The bootloader got confused. It went directly into BIOS/UEFI. My hardware is MSI Titan GT80. In the UEFI boot menu, it showed no disks at all. I had to unplug the external SSD and an additional internal SSD, boot into Win10, run bdcedit /remove {boot entry} then plug in the internal SSD, then boot.
Since then I haven't tried any more external SSD liveboots.
