Murder She Wrote were interesting books and there was a TV show that had hilariously bad Maine accents throughout. You could tell that pretty much none of them had ever once been to Maine and actually learned the accent.

So, that's my memory...

I do think I recall reading that someone else had taken over the book series and that she was no longer writing the books herself, kinda like other long-lived series.
