Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I have also considered using an external SSD, what was a pleasant surprise is that when I boot from the USB to Linux Mint Cinnamon I can access the files on my C Drive. I had assumed I would need to use something with large enough storage to duplicate the files and folders, the only thing I need...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Just when I thought I was on course to get it sorted; I haven't! After experimenting with Linux Zorine Lite, Mint Xcfe and Cinnamon I installed the latter on a 'SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB 2.0 Flash Drive - 32GB' where everything worked well for my intended use I then bought a what I thought would...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Thanks MikeWalsh. The price difference was not that huge anyway, I was just looking after the pennies! As I don't know if the 3.1 will have the same specification that make them run hot like 3.0 I actually decided to go with the 3.2 with 128gb. In addition to knowing that it will not get hot...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I'm using the usb to install Linux Mint Cinnamon and one programme, it looks like I can access all my files from the C drive ok. Amazon seem to list the Ultra fit 3.2 gen 1 in higher storage only, lower gb seem to be gen 3.1, is that just because it's smaller storage or is it worth investing in...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I'm very good at that MikeWalsh ;). I'm enjoying learning Linux and I am well aware that I will mess things up and hopefully learn from those mistakes. This forum has been really good helping me as a new user, especially as is often the case with me something doesn't seem that logical and I...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Then that's the model I will get, thanks Mike. What do you advise when I am prompted with partition size? I did try redoing mine last night and experimenting with the partition size, but ended up messing up both USB sticks, all very disheartening. I will have another go at repairing both tonight.

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I have practiced with a 30gb flash drive that I already had to make sure I could get it up and running before I invested in something with far more gb; I am actually typing this post on Linux Mint Xfce :). Scrolling on web pages is smooth and YouTube videos play without stuttering; both were...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I am That's interesting Mike, before buying a 128gb card I did try the one from my DSLR camera, when I right click it format it also said read only, but it had a lock tab on, once I slid that to unlock I could format it. Being 8gb I assume that's enough to install Xcfe to test to see if I can...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Thanks Brickwizard I am pretty sure it has an SD card slot, I know one of my laptops does ( I am not at home with it at the moment) in which case I can get a SanDisk Extreme 180MBs SDXC Memory Card - 128GB, assume that specification would be OK? My local Argos has them.

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Yes I noticed anything I did when testing live was not saved, that also the case if I leave it plugged in or do I need to do the same preparation as recommended in that link?

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Perfect thank you. "Persistent USB drive" is that a setting I choose or simply another way of saying that I'm leaving it plugged in?

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

Thanks Brickwizard. I assumed I would run it live from a USB as I did with Cinnamon, then as before select the desktop icon inviting installation, then be prompted where the installation is to be directed to, selecting the second larger 128gb capacity micro USB that I was intending to use a an...

Install Linux mint Xfce 'onto' a USB to run alongside Windows 10

I had recently tried a clean install of Linux Mint Cinnamon without much success so with the help of this forum (thank you) I reinstalled Windows 10. I have since run a live version of Linux mint Xfce and am keen to now install it to give it a proper try; this time I would like to run it along...

    Can't boot from USB

Thanks again, mine appear to be HDD, is it straightforward to swap to SDD; sounds complex? Along the same lines I had thought I'd investigate to see if it was easy to add more Ram, I'd fear I'd break something if I tried doing either of those things, as it stands both are still working; I don't...

    Can't boot from USB

Thanks Brickwizard, that worked perfectly. For the time being I reinstalled Windows 10 as I still wanted iTunes, reliable Networking and a quality version of solitaire. I could achieve some sort of Networking but it was unreliable, iTunes no matter what I did I could not get to install and...

    Can't boot from USB

Thanks for the recommendation, it's more a case I still have iTunes credit; I'll definitely check those out in time. I am one of those typical blokes who is apparently hard to buy for, so it's vouchers then lol, these days Amazon, back in the day it was iTunes; I've had them years! Apparently...

    Can't boot from USB

Thanks Brickwizard I will look at that later, assume the short boot menu will in effect achieve the same desired result that I could boot back to Windows 10 from a USB flash drive?
