Internet connection problem after using a Tor/Tails live CD

I have an internet connection problem after using a Tor/Tails live DVD.

On an old Dell Optiplex GX270 I had a Windows XP installation which was connecting perfectly to broadband through a wired connection to the router.

I tried a Tor/Tails Live DVD for the first time - I browsed a bit and closed it down normally. There was no sign of any problem until I re-booted into XP and couldn't connect to the internet.

I had been intending to put Windows 7 on that machine anyway so I went ahead and did that assuming that this would sort out the problem anyway.
I now can't connect to the internet with Windows 7 either and I get an "Error 651" message if I try to set up a connection.

I also tried a live Puppy Linux disc as that normally connects very easily to the internet but that didn't connect either.

BUT if I put in the live Tor/Tails disc the machine connects to the internet perfectly - so it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem.

All the while my other main Desktop PC is connecting perfectly to the internet as normal through the same router.

Has Tor/Tails somehow changed a setting which allows it to connect to the internet but is preventing Puppy Linux, XP and 7 from doing so?
If so, that change has also survived an installation of 7.

I'd be really grateful for any help.

If you Google Error 651 you will get many results e.g. http://www.smarttricks.net/fix-error-651-in-windows-7-8

My vote is that a LiveCD does not change the computers configuration. It is more likely that trying to install Windows has caused your problems...

Majority of times it's due to dust kind of issue or plug error. Perhaps this solution might help you out.

Or a solution from Microsoft might be a boon for you.

Let me know if the issue is still there.

OK, lets take this one step at a time.

When you say cannot connect to the internet doesn't give anyone much to go on and I never believe any windows error messages so lets try the following:

Does windows get an IP Address?
Can the system ping its IP Address?
Are you able to ping your router?

We can start here to see where the issue might be.

Um, guys, hate to be the one to break it to you but this thread is dated September 2014, hence the references to XP.

Which is not to say that there may be some open, unanswered problems here.
