How to get started with linux on a M1 Pro mac.

Hello everyone I am new to linux and have worked with windows for past 10 years recently switch to mac and now I want to go into linux to become a better programmer. So can anyone tell me how to do it on a m1 mac and i would say i prefer not to use VM and also suggest me the best linux distro to install for m1 in which i can learn all about linux and have a complete control after understanding it.
