Ubuntu 22.04 and XRDP

I have some Ubuntu 22.04 machines joined to our corporate network and log on to them using domain accounts to give access to file shares etc.
We are trying to remote desktop to these using xrdp. When trying to remote desktop from a Windows 11 domain machine (using a domain account) we get the error “xrdp session: Login failed for display 0”. Googling this there are numerous hits but with no working solution.
Our users have the need to remote desktop to the Ubuntu machine in the office from their home using a Windows 11 domain connected machine via a Corporate VPN.
Any help would be appreciated.

These instructions are for redhat based distro's, but they may help.
For what it's worth, most corporate VPNs do not allow port 3389 traffic by default.

Note: This was only done on RockyLinux 9.x and Fedora41. I suspect other distro's may be similar, but since I didn't test them, I won't mention them here.

What is xrdp? It's like rdp for Windows. It lets you view, login to and use a remote computers Graphical desktop. It's just like being logged into that computer locallly.

This step only applies if you don't already an Xwindows GUI installed. If you already have Gnome or KDE or a DE installed, skip down to the next section.
