What OS and version would you all recommend for building a syslog server? We have one in our old data center, we lost our linux person, and it's time to build a new one. I have very basic knowledge but a lot to learn. I wouldn't mind building one for practice at home first.

That's kind of like asking.. what kind of car should I buy?

What Linux is on your other systems?
What's the priority? price, stability? features? ease of setup?

My current syslog server runs on Debian 7.9 and is free so I would like to stay free. It is about 6 years old. It just uses rsyslog and has been good. We have only a few linux servers, almost all windows shop. Our security team has a different product that they look up security events. I really only need this to help with troubleshooting looking back in history of firewall logs and other network devices. Ease of setup would be good just because I'll have to support it. Let me know if you need any other info.
