Hello I started using Ubuntu about 6 months ago and I really like its facilities (or, better said, I really like using OS that actually works and does not limit me the way Windows does it). However, I am thinking about choosing another distro. I have read various sites about many distros and Gentoo has really caught my heart. I know I don't have enough "Linux and compilator experiences", but I would like to gain them and now I am trying to find out what my next steps should be.
Firstly, I was thinking about Debian (mostly because its stability and because Ubuntu is based on it). However, I have read that because of its slow release cycle it can out-of-date to new things. I do not have any special experiences with Debian, so I am asking here, what the situation about new things is really like?
Other distros that came to my mind are Fedora and Arch (isn't it too hard for stepping from Ubuntu?), but I am opened to any other suggestions.
I would prefer stable, up-to-date distro (it it is possible) that would run properly on a new ultrabook (I am currently thinking about buying it and have not made my mind up yet). Can you also tell me what my best way to Gentoo can be (what distros to use before switching to it)?
Edit: I need to use Windows for some things. I don't like the idea, but I would need to dual-boot the distro with win7/8
