Hi fam- new member- I toyed with Ubuntu 13 years ago, but forgot the commands. Fed up with Windows, Google, Facebook big 7 companies selling my data. Opensource is what am investing in... and tired of subscriptions fpr everything.

Currently have old mac air 2008 and a Lenovo think Book AMD Ryzen 5 6600H
3.30 GHz
16GB ram (13.7 usable)
64 bit operating system x64
NVIDA GEFORCE RTX studio
AmD Radeon Graphics

SSD 500GB Hard drive with optional second slot.

1) Options- Use Macbook Air for learning.
2)or use Lenovo with windows 11 add second hard drive and load Ubuntu.

I want OpenSource, privacy, and looking at self hosting my data and files security cameras, and maybe contro some future IoTs. I use Brave Browser, and VPN and am starting to be active in Web3.

I plan to go to a meetup in 2 weeks, but wanted to get your thoughts. And yes, I am reading the beginning files sent with my welcome page.

G'day BTH, Welcome to Linux.org

All of that sounds doable. I especially like the sound of a second SSD with your Linux distro on that. That makes a whole lot of sense.

Lenovo with shit windows 11 add second hard drive SSD and load Ubuntu, or Linux Mint
SSD's are much quicker

The first 'must' to do before installing......is to go into the bios and disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot. (This is assuming a second ssd drive, just for Linux)

From that point on, the installation should be a breeze. I would also suggest an external drive to store Timeshift snapshots on, and maybe backups when you get that far along...maybe music/movies etc etc as well ?....so 2TB?
Just a thought.

(Timeshift....stores snapshots of system files (only !)..so if you happen to break the install when practising, you can restore from Timeshift snapshots easily. Remember....system files only...not pics, music data, and the like.

SSD 500GB Hard drive ....hopefully SSD ?
