Tried to install Medicat, a really useful application that includes Ventoy. I aborted the install as it ran into some problem. However, it left me with a .fuse file that is locked by an application that likely has already terminated. When I try to delete the file- 23 gbytes, it appears to go away, but, on reload of the files, it's back with another incremental name.

I've tried to locate a running process that is locking the file, to no avail.

Regards.

Which version etc of Linux are you running?

Where did the download come from?

Do you have Timeshift installed?....or a backup taken prior to installing medicat

It's likely that other processes or commands are keeping this .fuse file open. If you find out what those other processes are, and close them, then you may be able to free up the .fuse file and remove it. To find out what the relevant files are, run:
Code:
lsof .fuse...
See what is in the COMMAND column or the PID column and then close or kill them. Then try and remove the .fuse file. A 23Gig file doing nothing sounds like a bit OTT.

Mint 21.1

The download came from medicatusb.com. I also used github after the first installation terminated. These were all torrent downloads.

Yes, I have Timeshift installed and operating. The prior backup goes to the 26th. However, the .fuse file in question resides on a data drive, not the system drive.

I suspect the file size is being mis-reported. I terminated the torrent after observing it would take over 24 hours to download.

It's likely that other processes or commands are keeping this .fuse file open. If you find out what those other processes are, and close them, then you may be able to free up the .fuse file and remove it. To find out what the relevant files are, run:
Code:

See what is in the COMMAND column or the PID column and then close or kill them. Then try and remove the .fuse file. A 23Gig file doing nothing sounds like a bit OTT.
I used HTop and found a fuse entry running as root. When I attempted to install the program it asked for my user password. When I tried to kill the process, nothing happened.

I did try the lsof .fuse command, and got this:

silverfox@silverfox-Metron:~$ lsof .fuse
lsof: status error on .fuse: No such file or directory
lsof 4.93.2

the .fuse file in question resides on a data drive, not the system drive.
What are the chances of being able to format the data drive?

Are there any clues in looking at the permissions for that file ?

This is a dual boot machine. I'm going to boot winders and try to delete the file that way.

Yeah. finally something useful from winders. I deleted the directory and everything. The file didn't even show up when I booted into windows. Must have purged when I rebooted.

Thanks for the help all.

Perhaps try with the fully qualified file path name, for example:
Code:
lsof /home/<user>/.../.fuse
