I am looking for an app that I can use on a USB flash drive to manage partitions and the drive in general. I did install GParted and it seems like it only looks at the main HD.

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Not sure how I will then get around this as I have Linux Mint bootable setup on the only other spare large flash drive and I would imagine I would then need to kill that to setup Foxclone.

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Another thing with the issue I had on Ubuntu that I found interesting looking at it from a Windows perspective was the following. When I was at the Ubuntu login screen it told me that user dave could not be found. I could however still log into it but had no sudo privileges using the normal...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Yeah I will need to get a new flash drive that has more space on it. I do have the one with my Mint Bootup on it but I want to keep that one as it is. I have the external HD waiting and ready and it has loads of space on it for the image.

What Do YOU Look For in a Desktop Linux? How Do YOU Choose?

I am a long time Microsoft user going back to the first days of DOS. I got to the stage I just could not put up with Microsoft any longer especially since the Windows 11 situation and having Windows 12 now right behind that. I started off with Linux Mint Cinnamon and then went to Ubuntu...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

I downloaded it and was going to give it a go but it seems I need a larger USB drive as I now only have 4GB drives spare and it does not seem to work on these. I did have a larger (suspect) USB and managed to make that a bookable drive but it seems being suspect I picked up issues with that...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Well this I am going to do for sure. Up until now it was not a huge issue installing Linux again as I was still getting into it so no real data was lost. The few data files I did have I had backed them up just in case I ran into an issue.

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

I used Timeshift on the basic install then again when I had installed all my applications. The thing is with this even if I had of used it on the Ubuntu issue it would not have worked as it also requires your password to run. With my issue this was the problem as the username and password were...

Another interesting thing here when I tried to boot from the Mint USB boot disk I got the following error. Verification failed: (0x1A) Security Violation I had to disable secure boot to get it booted up.

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

I must admit I thought twice about installing this but I had it on my Windows installation and it gave me some neat tools to managed the laptop. Thinking about it now I would not be surprised if this is what cause my problem. Well from every fail there is a learning curve so being new to Linux...

Right I tried all this and still could not get into the root as mentioned, I just got errors back from each command. I think I am now just going to go back to Mint and do a clean install once again.

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

I will just jump to this before I try the above. What does bother me is that I did install two applications via terminal and now when I wanted to install Brave Browser I found it was doing this. The application I installed were AnyDesk - Oh and I did test it and it worked but when I logged...

Right this is what I got when I typed it in correctly, it does not mean much to me however. dave@dave-Vostro-3558:~$ cat /etc/passwd root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash daemon:x:1:1:daemon:/usr/sbin:/usr/sbin/nologin bin:x:2:2:bin:/bin:/usr/sbin/nologin sys:x:3:3:sys:/dev:/usr/sbin/nologin...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Yes I thought I would try the Dave first just to make sure my user name did not contain the Cap D. My second attempt was with dave. Not sure if this is of any help but I tried to run the following. dave@dave-Vostro-3558:~$ cat /ect/passwd cat: /ect/passwd: No such file or directory...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

Right I was able to get into it doing the above. It asked me to log in and I seem to do that with my username and password. I did this and have attached a screen shot below. The thing is even that it seemed I could log into my username when I try and run any command it asks me for my...

    Ubuntu, lost user privileges

For some reason I seem to have lost my user privileges on my Ubuntu Cinnamon installation. When booting up I get the normal logon screen with my username dave. However I do see a prompt to the left of this saying user not listed. I am able to log on using that username and password but once in I...
