I have had very good luck with Lenovo Thinkpads, you can get them refurbished at reasonable prices.
If you want a machine with preinstalled Linux you can look at System 76, Slimbook and others. Some dells work well also.

Yep, Discover is a KDE thing. I don't use it much. Still use apt and always install synaptic. My choice. But I can see a day when synaptic will not be installable on some distros. :(
I don't think the complaint is so much about some of the flavors of Ubuntu but the main Distro. I can empathize with the author on some points. But I too at times use Lubuntu and Kubuntu. they are good and you can de-snap them if you want.

Though mint comes setup to use flatpacks I don't think the .iso contains any just the setup so you can install them.
But I maybe wrong about that. Where as ubuntu ships with firefox , thunderbird and I believe a couple others.
There was a request by some developers on Fedora to move to KDE as the default. It's only a preposal and has not been acted on yet so will be seen it if survives the process. I was testing Fedora 40 KDE 6 it's quite good. But still have some ruff edges I suspect they may have gotten fixed...
I've used tumbleweed and it is the best of rolling releases I've seen. Never liked Manjaro or arch but that is a personal choice. Bye the way @wizardfromoz has a setup with 80 or so distros installed at anyone time so Manjaro is only one of them.
